93 4.3 v6 Valve Adjustment

After replacing the head gaskets on a '93 Siverado, 4.3 V6 ..... the Chilton's manual states to tighten the valve locknut until I can't spin the push rod with my fingers, and then tighten one full turn (360).
If I do that, the valves are open and I lose all compression. I backed off and I got my compression back, and the truck starts.
Where am I suppose to set the valve adjustment? One full turn is too much. Do I set it at 1/2 turn? 1/4? Feeler gauge?

I set them by tightening down till i can't move the push rod up and down, then a half to 3/4 turn more. I wouldn't go less than half turn.

i belive 3/4 is the correct amount to tighten the rocker arms that is after you get the freeplay out of the puch rods
1 turn makes a lovely backfire if you try to start it
