rough idle

My 1998 Ford Explorer with the SOHC engine has started idling very erratically (between 500 and 1500 RPMs) when I first start it up in the morning, the erratic idle goes away after a few minutes. The check engine light isn’t on and it doesn't do this at any other time during the day. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You have a classic case of a bad or dirty/plugged up IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It's a very simple part to change and you can pick it up at an autoparts store and install it yourself. Here is a site with full instructions: http://www.fixyourford.com/wontidle.html

Good luck.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Could also be lower intake manifold gaskets.
