Engine removal and install questions

I have a 93 1500 4x4...It all of a sudden has decided to burn oil like crazy..the truck has 150,000 miles on it and the body and 4x4 drive train is in tip top shape...Thinking about getting a 350 at the yard and swapping motors..Any info on how much of a pain this is and what to keep my eye on would be great help..

I just recently did an engin swap on a 92 Sierra with my dad's help he has been a mechanic for 30 years but never on gm. It took us about 8 hours we had a few minor problems but not to extremely bad. The hardest part was trying not to break exhaust manifold bolts and lining up engine and tranny but other than that pretty simple just remember what bolts go where and what wired and hoses go where. It is also a lot easier when you have access to a lift but I will be helping a freind in his driveway in a week so i will let you know how that goes.

Yeah, I helped my brother with his 92 recently, and I have pretty much the same advice. Try to take the exhaust manifold bolts out when the engine is hot if you can because the man's will expand and make it much easier. Take the time while dis-assembling to label everything, because there's no going back later. If you have a digital camera, take a few pictures as well. This can prove very helpful later. I don't know about yours, but my brother's had both metric and standard fasteners on it stock. Have them both handy and good luck.

start spraying down the exhaust bolts with penetrating oil a few days before you plan on unbolting them. if you've changed motors before you shouldn't have a problem. i'd use all the sensors& intake from the old motor. i'd also replace the oilpump& pickup, rear main seal, torque convertor seal(if you have an automatic), waterpump& thermostat before installing the new motor. if helps to put bolts& small parts in ziplock bags & label them. if you havn't already go buy a haynes or chilton they detail the probedure fairly clearly. good luck
