Exhaust Manifold...

Hello Everyone! I am 16 and got a nice fiero, which I am fixing up at this moment. I just need to do a couple of things. I was just wondering, I am have crack on my exhaust manifold, so what should I do? Shopuld I go get another one or maybe put some kind opf sealing stuff on it?

For the cost replace it, not realy worth welding unlees you can do it or have it done cheap. But then again a weld on the manifolds don't really last most of the time.

Also, when i push the petal to the floor, the car makes a sound and hesitates for a second before it takes off. Does anyone know what is wrong? It has just started. My car as 166,000 miles on it, does that have anything to do with it, maybe a part or something?

What kind of a sound when you floor it? Backfiring sound like a pop?

What has been replaced on the car recently?

Can you give us a little more background info?

At first idea, have you checked the timing?

Could be many other things too.

The sounds is like a rumbling sound and shakes for only a second and then takes off, but it only does this when i punch it to the floor. If I take off slowly and then punch it does not happen. I resently just changed oil, changed heater core, and belt. Dis. cap was replaced not to long ago. I just put a new K&N air filter in the car bout a month ago. Some backgorund on it is. The car is a 86' Fiero SE with 166,000. The belt breaks every 1,000 to 2,000 miles because of rusted pulleys, but i just bought a set of underdrive pulleys. As you see I also have a cracked mainfold. At first I thought that i let the gas get too low or the sprak plugs or wires becasue i could use new of them too come to think of it. the plugs are good becasue i checked them all, but the wires I looked at them all and found one cut, so I replaced it.

Is your car an auto or stick?

Midnightryder

It is an auto.

Could be slipping clutch packs, or a bad tranny pump. (The shaking thing) Anyway, that's my best guess.

Midnightryder
03-23-2004, 11:08 PM
Alright I wil check into that. Thanks...It could probably use a tune up also. So this weekend I am going to put a dis cap, spark plugs and wires to see maybe if that will help.

Would it be a good idea to put headers on the fiero, instead of replacing my cracked mainfold?

Well today...I just finished putting new spark plugs wires on my car. Next week I will be putting underdrive pulleys and a fuel filter on hopefully depending on weather...haha...i still have not fixed the problem, but dammit i will. lol

new question: how much would it cost to get someone to rebuild my engine because i think it could use it??? tomorrow i am going to put a set of underdrive pulleys on my car finally...w00t

how much power do u think they will add...10-15 hp??

i put a k&n air filter...do u think it added anything besides make it breathe better??? and last week i put a new set of spark plug wires on becasue the other were falling apart plus...found one crakced..=(

The sounds is like a rumbling sound and shakes for only a second and then takes off, but it only does this when i punch it to the floor.

The shaking sounds tranny-ish, but then again, if it sounds like the engine running out of gas when you do this, it's probably fuel related. Have you checked the throttle position sensor for a dead spot that would cause the ECU to not see the Closed to Wide Open Throttle change?
new question: how much would it cost to get someone to rebuild my engine because i think it could use it???

I rebuilt a 3.1L V6 myself and the parts and machine shop work cost $1,200. This included cylinders bored over .020 and heads shaved down .005. I replaced the pistons, cam,cam bearings, lifters, pushrods , rockers, and timing chain and gears. My crank was turned down a bit to clean it up and all lower bearings were replaced. I rebuilt the oil pump with a high pressure kit. The rods were fine so I left them as is. (GM v6 rods in general hold up VERY well, rumor has it they're rated for 7000rpm) No changes were made to the fuel system-yet :lol2:

With labor a rebuild like that I'm guessing would run you $1600-$2000

A decent freshening up, including a head job, re-ring, bearing and gasket replacment would cost under $1000, I assume. This would only apply if the engine was in good, non-abused condition.

Neither of my guesses involved labor for pulling/reinstalling the engine in the car.

tomorrow i am going to put a set of underdrive pulleys on my car finally...w00t

:swear:Slowing down the water pump on a Fiero is going to overheat it!

Midnightryder
04-05-2004, 06:22 PM
I puit on the pulleys yesterday and my car is running...the water pump is brand new...the last one I had on there did over heat it...I pushed it around with my hand...haha

See my car is not burning oil, but it is burning rich...how would I be able to stop that?

Midnightryder

About that pulley thing - are the accesories Underdriven (bigger pulleys that spin slower then the crank) or Overdriven (smaller pulleys spinning faster then the crank)

If they're underdriven, the water pump is spinning slower then it was and therfore pumping less then it was. This mean coolant circulates slower, and takes longer to get from the hot engine block in the back of the car to the radiator in the front of the car. THIS WOULD BE A BAD THING.

Anyway, you're running rich? How did you come to this conclusion and did you ever fix that stalls on quick take off problem?

Midnightryder
04-05-2004, 10:52 PM
I know what the pulleys do, plus that is why i run my fan when i am driving around to keep the engine cool...my dad told me that i was running rich...see he has a 87 gt...and he helps me every now and then, shoot we built my car from two different fieros...no i have not fixed the take off...but it is not affecting the overall driving...my dad is goin check it out this weekend for me (take off)

Ragtop_Renegade
04-05-2004, 11:50 PM
Ok, running rich (or lean) is normally caused by a bad sensor giving the ECM incorrect information. Start by checking the MAF/MAP sensor. Does your check engine light stay on or turn on and off?

Midnightryder
04-06-2004, 06:21 PM
the check engine light has never come on...is it bad that it is running rich? becasue i am not sure of that it hurts it or not....

Ragtop_Renegade
04-06-2004, 07:25 PM
It's better then running lean. Still, it's hard on the plugs and a waste of gas. Speaking of gas - can you smell raw gasoline in the exhaust? That's tell tale sign of running rich. Just don't sniff exhaust fumes too much or you'll die or something :1zhelp:

Midnightryder
04-06-2004, 08:45 PM
alright...but yeah it does have that raw gasoiine smell to it...i do sniff them a lot lol j/k =P...if it is running rich...bout how much will my gas mileage drop...a little? like a mile of two?

Ragtop_Renegade
04-06-2004, 08:56 PM
It varies - enough to notice you're at the pump a little more often. Isn't too hard to fix, probably a sensor somewhere. electronic parts are cheap at junkyards, any GM 2.8 from that time would be the same, Fiero or no.

Midnightryder
04-07-2004, 06:46 AM
my gas i usually let it get to about half a tank before i go fill it back up...dont want it to get too low...i have already do that once and i think i got some on that nasty stuff in my engine...not sure though

Midnightryder
04-09-2004, 09:56 PM
well today i was driving with my girlfriend through her neighborhood...and i saw a white fiero for sale....tell me if this is a good deal (only got outside and looked through windows) 88 formula...auto..125,736 miles on it...tires were not bad...and the inside was great...is this a good deal? (keep in mind the people were not home...so i was not able to look at the engine or let them start it)

Ragtop_Renegade
04-09-2004, 11:46 PM
Couldn't tell ya... you didn't say what the price was.

I'm getting ready to buy a Fiero.. forgot the year, but it's an iron duke 5 speed, runs and drives, seats ripped, tires flat (been sitting as few months) He wants $500, I'm going to offer him $350 and see if he bites.

Midnightryder
04-10-2004, 01:27 PM
ohhhhh sry the price is 3,200 or best offer...and i know that it has been taking care of...becasue i know the people that own it...but they have not been home...

Ragtop_Renegade

Sounds a little high - here's a car to watch , it'll show you what a top running low miles car is worth, you can get an idea from there.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2473363607&category=6419&sspagename=WDVW

About that running rich issue - I got my friends together and pondered it over a few beers, and after the blood was cleaned up and the cops left we came to the conclusion you have a vacuum leak.

Midnightryder
04-11-2004, 08:37 PM
vaccum leak huh??? like where would i find that at? what would i do seal it up...or put a new one in? man if it wasn't for these couple of things wrong this car would be great, but in its primer color...hahahaha

that car on ebay...is a good looking car...my dad has an 87 fiero gt with 67,000 miles and bought it from a general...for only 2,000 nothing wrong with it at all...everything is perfect interior and exterior...

i am not going ot even try for the forumla...cuz my dad wont get it for me even if i do talk the person down...he would be like get a job...lol =)

Ragtop_Renegade
04-12-2004, 10:35 AM
Check vacuum hoses over the engine. there's usually a vacuum diagram under the hood. One good trick is to remove 1 hose at a time and see if the engine changes rpm, or runs different. if it does, that's good. If not, then the line is leaking and needs to be changed. What you're doing here is creating a known vacuum leak on each connection, therefore the engine should start running worse. If it doesn't, then it's clear the line was already leaking and is in need of repair. I think the leak might be around your MAP sensor someplace. (Just a guess)

Midnightryder
04-12-2004, 11:56 AM
well i will check it this weekend...cuz i really want that smell out of there...besides the vacuum hose...do u think it could be anything else...

have u thoguht of anything for my other problem??? u know if i punch it to the floor...it makes a noise and shakes for a sec....then shoots out like a rocket...anything i could really use help

Ragtop_Renegade
04-13-2004, 12:15 AM
I really think the 2 problems are related. The vacuum leak is causing the engine to suck too much air on a fast take off and lean out, or is causing incorrect MAP data and slightly flooding out the engine. However, we can't rule out the transmission as the cause of that shake, so try a test... take off slowly and let the tranny shift into 2nd, then, as soon as it does, punch it hard... if you get the same thing we can probably rule out the tranny. Is that a 4 speed auto in there?

Midnightryder
04-13-2004, 07:52 PM
dude i dont know what the fuck is wrong with my car now...i knew something was wrong becasue of the sound today...no it is a 3 speed tranmission...the rumbling noise is starting to catch up when i take off slow too and that is fucking getting on my nerves...i dont believe this shit...all of the time and effort...not counting all of the money...i dont know what is wrong....i do not think it is the tranmission, well i think i am positive on that...shit my dad does not eve know what it is...he said it could be mutiple things...i was like great!!! >=(

i think i am goin to try to get a diff car...but to tell u the truth i really really want to keep this one...

Midnightryder
04-13-2004, 08:45 PM
see this is sad when ur dad gives u a car like this for ur first...it need so much work it is not even funny...he is on my last nerves too

Rumble.... like a clunk noise? that'd be a motor or tranny mount. Makes me think that way as it seems worse when you take off fast. Does it do it when you hold the brake and shift into drive? (but don't hit the gas or start moving) Don't feel so bad, "drivability" problems are the worst to fix. Oh, if the engine is giving you trouble this is the best solution:

lol spray gun huh...i bet that will be a site there...lol my car is going to be primer gray for a while..lol too damn broke plus have to fix body a lil

Midnightryder
04-13-2004, 09:27 PM

i found out a new probelm today....there was a noise coming from my car and i found where it is....behind the crank pulley...it is like a plate and i think it broke off...and it is just moving around behind the crank pulley...and the only way to get to it is take it off...

does anyone know...what the things is behind the crank pulley??? like what is the purpose??? could it be causing the vibrations when i take off??? plz plz plz help me...

Midnightryder
04-16-2004, 07:02 AM
i think the problem i found is causing everything...the harmonic balancer is broken...which sucks...well i am not goin to buy it hopefully...=P hopefully once i ptu that one my car will run great again

Ragtop_Renegade
04-17-2004, 12:34 AM
I was going to say the the loose plate sounds like the balancer is falling apart, but you beat me to it, lol.
My Beretta did that, too, now that I recall, but I smoked the head gasket before it became bad enough to notice. I caught it starting to fall apart when I pulled the motor apart. Scored up a cylinder, warped both heads, all that antifreeze in the oil pan totally f*cked up the crank journals, so trust me, you don't have it so bad...

I do have better news- went to check out the 86 Fero I spotted, guy put it up for sale last fall at $500, since then it's manifested a fuel injection problem (running rich-how's that for irony?) and sprung leaks in the clutch line and brakes- I offered $200 and he took it, should have the car home by this time next week. Now we can complain together! :loser:

Midnightryder
04-17-2004, 01:14 PM
lol yeah we can complain together...becasue i have a lot hahahah

well myu dad just pulled of the balancer...but every fucking place around here dopes not even have one...O_o

So he left to go to the junk yard and maybe napa...dont know...yeah once i heard the outter thing of the balancer hitting my pulley i parked it and took my mom's car...lol

Midnightryder
04-17-2004, 01:16 PM
wow sounds like u got a lot of work to do one that car man....where r u goin to start first hahahaha

Midnightryder
04-18-2004, 04:45 PM
w00t! I got it fixed yesterday and it runs soooo good...man u can tell...takes off like a rocket..=)

Thank god i got my car back cuz I didnt want to take my mom's car to school the whole week...to big and slow hahahahaha jk
