i know that i used to use 89 octane untill about two weeks ago, and switched to premium(93). i have noticed a slight increase in pickup. i was told by a friend that the cost per gallon makes up for it when it comes to your miles per gallon. so it is worth it from what i hear.

I believe the compression on the LS motor does not constitute using premium gas. In most cases, I find cars that use premium gas when they should be using mid or lower grade gasoline actually lose a small amount of power. That I can't explain. However, it's basically a waste of money to use a higher octane. Octane just prevents the combustion chamber pressures from pre-igniting the fuel mixture and has nothing to do with the gasoline's purity or power potential.

Chevron Gas website admits that using 91 octane will not add horsepower to a car that is not required to use 91 octane. You might be wasting your money because it will not burn completly.

If you notice better difference from using it, it means you have carbon deposits which can make engine seem to run better with higher octane gas.
Also higher engine temps do better with higher octane because of detonation possibly.

I would recommend 89 octane which I use on my '95 SE, which can help with less pinging or minor deposits.

actually 93 octane is a better fuel to use. it is possible to gain 1 pony for using it. i said possible. as for the 93 octane, it is a better fuel b/c it burns cleaner. leaving less deposits on the exhaust valves. as for what chevron is saying, can be true. if you have the cheapest plugs and wires, your fuel might not burn completly at all. so atleast have decent to really good plugs and wires to get the most of the higher octane. and the fuel injectors do not make a difference in our cars. only if we try to use diesel or leaded fuel. and the hotter the engine is the more of a chance the you have premature combustion. that usually occurs if you put diesel which is a higher octane in yourr teg. and as far as the pinging and deposits go, ask any mechanic and they will tell you that premium is alot cleaner and does not promote pinging, it will either lessen or stop depending on the vehicles condition. its like which is better for your car, synthetic, or the 99 cents a quart oil?

Right now i am reluctant to use, or recommend premuim octane on my non v-tec, cause the price so damn high, like more than 20 bucks a fill-
up on premium.

I think it is overkill using that high, but there's no harmful things done by using it. if it works for you, and you can afford it, that's great.

By the way, know one mentions what brand of gas they use?
I try to fill up on Chevron gas always. My uncle works at Chevron and he puts premuim octane in his 1991 corolla, i think it's overkill, but he disagrees and says he gets more power, oh well, we agree to disagree.

Right now i'm using valvoline maxlife oil, i think sythetics are great for racing and high revving, it's true about cheap oils, avoid them at all cost.

isn't diesel like half the octane of gasoline? and you can't put diesel in a teg it won't burn. diesel needs very high compression to burn and no plugs or any of that shit on a diesel either. burns just from compression and atomization.

edit: Don't you get more Octane the more refined the oil is? for instance the various forms of fuel oil (6 oil for heating plants and huge oil burners, home heating oil, 2 oil for trains and shit, diesel fuel, etc.) then kerosene, then gasoline, then race fuel and stuff.

I mean lets say diesel, kero, gas, and high octane race gas.
wouldn't diesel be the lowest octane here, and race gas the highest?

sorry, worded wrong. you can't put deisel and leaded in your car and expect it to run. premature combustion can happen with say jet fuel. which is a really high octane.
