90 celica problems.......

i have a 90 celica gt. i have a very odd problem with the car. when i get up to about 5000 rpm the car cuts out, but its not like a stall.it is almost like if i had the car in 2nd gear at 50 mph and let off the gas. you know how a car will jerk when you do that. however it does not do this all of the time. i cleaned the injectors and fuel rail. and i replaced the fuel filter. any suggestions on what my problem might be would be helpful.

I must admit that is kinda odd.. What does the car redline at?

Sounds like it might be time for a rebuild. If the car has been driven hard or has seen a lot of races and has about 150k miles on it you've hit it's life expectancy. If you're burning oil you might just need a valve job. Either of these could coase a jerking or cutting off of a heavily used motor.

Yes I have to agree with the rebuild idea.. That should solve your problem definately, and also in doing so your get back so much more of your performance.. Since you know it happens at 5000 RPM's then you are definately driving it hard..

Recently my 1990 Celica ST began losing power...i dont mean small amounts, i mean like i could feel 30-50HP being lost instantly...it was even having trouble in 2nd gear on flat roads.....

My dad, my uncle, and myself began fixing it...we found that the ST and GT versions between the years 1990-1993 have issues with losing the power of a cylinder or two....we had to change the spark plugs, and distributor cap.....CHANGE THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP....it was mine and a few others that i know problems...this cap seems to go bad every 3-5 years....check it before you do anything else

i know that i dont need a rebuild because the car runs like new unless i get it up to 5k. it doesnt burn any oil. i have new plugs,wires, cap and rotar. it just feels like the computer is shutting down the fuel pump. but it shouldnt do that until i red line right? it red lines at 62k.could it have anything to do with a dirty intake manifold? im stumped. any other suggestions????

Well the computer issue is a possibility, but it should let you redline it yes.. You might want to try getting your fuel system professionally cleaned (even if it's not specifically the problem, it doesn't cost that much at all anyway) and if you have never changed your fuel filter you should go ahead and do that too (another low cost item, should be changed every 30,000 miles or so).. Intake manifold I wouldn't think could do somthing that specific, cause if it's dirt getting in then you would see it happening more often then 5k on your RPM's.. If you haven't already reset the computer, just disconnect your negative battery cable for at least 30 seconds, then try running your car again..

i have one more problem. i raced an accord and he handed my ass to me. this didnt seem right because i have beat him before. so i went home and poped my hood, and my #3 plug wire was half out of the hole. this isnt the first time this has happened. any ideas on what it could be????

If the plug wire isnt holding then I would change the wire.. Usually it can be a bad clip on the wire.. Also pop open your hood with the engine running in the dark and see if there are any sparks comming off of the plug wires, if so change them all anyways..

ok i replaced the plugs and wires. but the problem was still there. so i gave up and figured i would worry about it later. i took my stock air box of and replaced it with a cold air intake and now the problem is gone. funny how things work out..... its almost as if it wasnt getting enough air at high rpms. witch in turn wouldnt let my plugs fire, so the car didnt run. either way im just happy it runs good.

Dude the problem was most likely a clogged up air filter all along, thats why it choked it at high RPMs. Quite contrary to marketting crap the stock intakes are actually pretty frickin good if you use a good clean filter. There are obviously small gains to those cold air intakes (not 'cold air', toyota already takes 'cold air' from the wheelwell and front) but its pretty insignificant enless your engine already is producing so much HP that becomes a bottleneck.

I still say if your hooking up your car that you do the professional fuel system clean, my friend had it done and the performance difference was crazy.. Good job on the fix by the way
