need some clarification on this subject for whoever can help.. it seems that my girlfriend says that the 1998 mirages and the 1998 lancers are exactly the same body type just different engines and stuff.... and each country has a different name for the same car... mirage=usa and lancer=japan... so can anyone supply pictures and links or verify the type of each cause shes starting to make me believe that they are both the same car and stuff

Besides the motor....the car nose is a little different. The rear looks the same to me.

They are the same car, well at least the body. ive seen some mirage to evo 4,5,6 conversions. those were only skin deep and ive never seen an engine/drivetrain swap i image it wouldnt be very easy or cost effective to do

In Australia the mirage is simply the hatchback version of the Lancer.

Mirage and Lancer are pretty much the same, Mitsubishi tend to name cars in different names in different countries. Just like Montero in US, Pajero in Asia. Lancer and Mirage in the same year, they look exactly the same except for the trunk lid. And the engine, there's not a huge difference. There's Lancer MX with 1.5 DOHC and Lancer MR with 1.6 Mivec. But no matter what cars, there's always a difference in the engines or totally different engines between the US spec and J-Spec. Even civics and Corollas, those in Japan has totally different engines too. And since the US has different safety rules, the front and back bumpers for the mirage in US are little bigger than the Asia's Lancer. In year 2002, the US Mitsubishi renamed it back to Lancer since the Evolution came out, so they replaced the Mirage with Lancer ES, LS and OZ. So yes, Mirage is Lancer.
