If you have windows, hittin alt+printscreen will grab a copy of whatever program is currently running and as you've read, printscreen will grab the whole desktop.

Pressing the print screen button will place a copy of your entire screen on the clip board. Now open a program like Paintshop Pro, Photoshop or even MSpaint and press copy. Walla. :)

I use Snag It!... www.snagit.com - for a 45 day trial version.
I have been using this for a little over a year. I love it! You can save it as different file types (i.e.e .bmp or .jpg) and can also scale down pics too. You can choose to capture a screen, region, window etc.
