Tire Issue

I have metric size rims and they are 220 55 R380. These tires cost about $300 a piece and only michelin makes them. Do any other tires fit these type of rims? Any suggestion would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Michel

According to my yardstick, 380mm is very close to 15 inches, about 1/16 inch off, so probably tires made for 15" rims will fit.

DO NOT,

DO NOT,

DO NOT,

mount any tires on metric rims except metric tires.

They may hold air until you go around a corner then all four would go flat leaving control as a questionable issue.

Wheels are cheap on e-bay and some come with tires.

i had the same problem when i bought my 735i. it had 220/55/r390's i talked to a knowledgable man at town fair tire and the cheapest and best thing to do was to get new wheels and tires. i ended up with a set of 14's and you can get some fairly cheap tires for those

Yes, but 390 is not 380. At 390, you'd be off by more than 1/4 inch. The conversion factor is 25.4, so 25.4*15 inches equals 381, only 1 mm difference. If a tire couldn't maintain a seal over that distance you could never bump a curb or a headstone without the tire deflating. I'd go buy a used 15" tire and drive it around for a week just to be sure. Unless, of course, he wants new wheels anyway?

bmw never made a 380mm rim. they made 390mm rims way to do your researchbefore you post like an asshole. he either needS to buy the $300 god damn tires, or buy new rims and tires which will be cheaper in the long run. DON'T PUT AMERICAN SIZE TIRES ON METRIC RIMS.

Excuse me, but maybe if you, 85-735i, could please write a complete sentence we can figure out just who it is you are calling an asshole. Now then...

1) The thread originator, michelq, apparently claims to have 380mm rims based on his opening line, "I have metric size rims and they are 220 55 R380". I just assumed he meant the rim size is 380mm, even though what he wrote looks like a tire size.

2) Then 85-735i states that, "bmw never made a 380mm rim". That may be true but michelq never claimed the wheels were BMW wheels and I don't know if ANYONE ever made wheels that were labeled 380mm, nor do I give a damn. But, IF michelq really has 380mm diameter wheels, then 15 inch American tires will fit. Again, 15"=381mm, 1mm difference from that stated size, that's 0.03937 inches, less than 4/100ths of one inch. If that's too much then please explain how a tire can hit a curb and remain inflated. How can a tire remain inflated at -30F and also at +115F if that's too much? Show me the math.

3) IF michelq has 390mm wheels, then 85-535i is right. That extra 10mm is way too much. DO NOT put American sized tires on 390mm wheels.

4) You can chime in any time, michelq.
