Anyone know why - losing speed while driving - 96 grand caravan es

It's a 96 Grand caraven ES 3.8 litre. 140k+ miles. It happened a number of times that all the sudden the van just stopped moving forward as fast as it should as I stepped on the gas paddle more. This time the "Service Engine Soon" Light was on and it was low on gas. I just have it oil changed a couple weeks ago. Anybody knows why? Thanks.

Does your van just lose power or is it droping into a lower gear thus slowing down? If the rpms go up it is down stiffing. How long after doing this does the engine light go on? Is right away? Does it stay on or does it go off after you have stopped for a time? Does your van have the orginal tranny in it? Ride On, digimon

I think i may know what your problem my mother has a 97 Grand Voyager 3.3 and she was just driving it one day and the RPM's got very high as if was in lower gear and it stalled. she started it up again, and the service engine soon light, after telling me i said she should take it to the mechanic because it had fludid in te trans. Luckily it was nothing that big just a crappy sensor alot of MOPAR cars has the problem it was $70 installed. I have a hunch this may be your problem too since the cars are close in year. Its nothing serious the car is driveable that way but the down shifting into 1st can happen at any time so its best to get the senson fixxed. Hope I was able to help goodluck

if you want to fix it yourself you can purchace the sensor from the dealer for about $25-$30 dollars.. the sensor is located right on top of your tranny housing...may be necessary to remove airfilter housing.. had 2 replace mine 3x already.. 10 min job now.. voyangers also have the same problem too...
