well first of all let me say was up all. im new to this forum and plan on posting a lot but anyways im a current gs-t driver. just my car two months ago. got big plans for it but anyways. maybe u guys can help me with this question why is it that u need bigger side walls on rims for better launches wouldnt wider tires be better since it gripps the concrete better. anyone other there with the answer?

Because they cause more of a ripple effect when launching to increase traction. Wider tires do not affect the friction you will get on the road.

how would wider tires not help? what would give u more traction.
6" of rubber in contact with the ground or 12" of rubber

and taller softer sidewall will help also.
I think its common sence, thats why dragster dont race with low profile tires

You have to remember that surface area doesn't affect friction. Stickier tires usually are wider so that they wear less (less pressure, less wear), but for the difference between a 7 inch wide tire and an 8, you won't benefit from increased traction.
