I own a 1986 Monte Carlo LS with a 305/4bbl. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how it compares with the other Monte Carlo models in terms of power and performance.

According to "the books" they were about 145 horses, the SS's were about 165...but i think that's bullshit.
Mine has an all stock engine and will melt the tires off until u let off the gas...its gotta be more than that

Well the ss model has a lot more power from the 305 H.O..it has 180 HP stock ...ss has the posi rear, dual exhaust which you can easily modify for tone/perfromance and a couple of diff. body parts than the LS.

Are the Chilton books wrong? they say 165 for the ss, and i was pretty sure that was bullshit

I think that might just be for the 84 ss, they had the least HP of the 4th gen.. In 85 they boosted it up.

I think that some of the ss came with a 350.

tha ss does have more power but you can swap your motor or modify your 305 my 84 is not an ss but the modified 305 will smoke em all day Im giving it to my son when its done other wise I would have a big block in it but it still putting out at least 250 hp.

With the right cam and gears you can get just as much HP out of a 305 as a 350...where i race my car 350's and 305's race together, and the 305's are just as competitive...its all about the right parts

The 4th Gen. SS Did Not come stock with a 350. It could have been a dealer option for extra cost, or change by a previous owner. Its cheaper to change to a 350 than build a 305. I have a 1988 Monte Carlo SS with the stock 305. When I got it, the block was cracked. In ignorance, I looked for and installed another 305 from another SS. I could have installed a used 350 for the same cost and gained at least 50 HP with a stock 350. OH WELL. Go to www.montecarloss.com for more information.
