Chrysler to Revive Charger

Chrysler is planning to come out with a new Dodge sedan by early next year that will carry an old name, Charger, The Detroit News reported.

The new, rear-wheel-drive Charger is expected to debut as early as next January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and could be on sale by next spring, according to Chrysler officials familiar with the plans, the News said.

The rear-drive Charger was phased out in the late 1970s and revived briefly in the 1980s as a front-wheel drive coupe. The reborn Charger will be a mass market sedan built on the same platform as the new Chrysler 300 Series sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon, the News said.

If it is available with the 5.7 Hemi, at least it will live up to its name.

IMHO new Dodge Magnum wagon that is coming out will be the most matcho car of the last decade.

The concept Charger was debuted in 2002, and was intended for a Sept 2003 release for the 2004 Dodge line-up. It was back-burnered for a while, but is now in the lime-light again. It looks as though a mad scientist somehow merged a 2003 Intrepid with a 1970 Charger ('69 is better, but I'll take a '70) it's a rear wheel drive with the Hemi option. The only slight downside is that it's a 4-door, although the rear looks like the handles are shaved, so the doors blend into the body almost seamlessly.

a VERY nice car, indeed, and worth the Google search for pics!!

Whoa!:eek2: I didn't think that they were actually gonna make chargers again! I thought that it would just stay a concept car. I don't like the idea of 4 doors and rear independant suspension, but it least it has most of the old styling cues and it just looks awesome. Good job Chrysler!:bigthumb:

Well, if anyone will make it, Chrysler will. The Prowler and Viper show that they undersand the auto enthusiast. I just finished Car and Driver, where they test the Hemi 300 C. Its awesome that this is Chrysler's bread and butter sedan, yet it rips off 5.3 sec zero to 60 times. WOW. Very brave of Chrysler.
Boy, GM would never do that, for very long. Too much hand wringing that it would take sales away from the Vette (which was their complaint about the Regal GNX, Syclone and Typhoon)

Chrysler to Revive Charger

There is no Chrysler anymore it is now part of Daimler which is a German company.

The German companies have never made high performance cars for the masses. They produce hot cars for the elite only. Therefore I predict that these vehicles will not be priced so that the average Joe can afford them. Don't forget that the original GTO was about a $300 option on an affordable Tempest LeMans for a total price of about $3300. The new Charger needs to be $15,000 to be of equal value.

If it is not then what Daimler does is completely irrelevant to the vast majority of buyers.

Automobile had a little write up about the Charger. It is going to be Dodge's version of the 300c basically. Originally Daimler-Chrysler didn't want this made because they were afraid it would out perform the higher up Benz sedans. Looks like they have gotten past that and are "going" to start producing them.

Before you guys get all upset about it using the same body as the 300c, look at it this way: They will probably take the same engine and put it in it much lighter version of the 300c. Now supposedly the 300c is capable of 0-60 in 5.3 and a 14 1/4 mile. This is with 340 hp/390 ft/lbs in 3700+ pound frame. Think of how nice it would be if they could lose a couple hundred pounds...
