Very sad news. And now France and the U.S. are apparently 'talked' about being the next targets. And I just heard that a plan to attack America again is 90% complete. How that is known I have no clue, and the news reporter(Neil Cavuto) didn't sound too strong in saying it either. Definately affecting the stock market as well. Which isn't good for me and my investments.

i don't understand why Al Queada would target spain (BBC said they were prime suspects). There's nothing logical about it. Its a tragedy though and there's nothing logical about terrorism anyway.

I feel sorry for the people who got hurt.

Wow! Thats got to be upsetting...have you heard anything?

First they thought it was Basque seperatists, but do they usually attack plain civilian targets?

I knew it was going to be blamed on Al Qaeda eventually...

Yes, I think that the Basque speratists do attack plain civilian targets. I am not 100% sure, though.

I too also feel very sorry for all the people who where hurt during this tragic event.

“This is part of settling old accounts with Spain, the crusader, and America’s ally in its war against Islam,” the claim said.

The statement taunted the prime minister, asking: “Aznar, where is America? Who will protect you, Britain, Japan, Italy and others from us?”

That's why. They're trying to turn allied countries against each other. Hopefully people won't take the bait.

Spanish authorities, while not totally dismissing other versions, are pretty convinced it's ETA, a militant Basque separatist group, who's responsible.

When I first heard about it the first thought I had was ETA. I guess we'll see. Or not. Who knows.

I just feel for all the people who've lost loved ones :(

Too early to know for sure who is ultimately responsible. No good asking American intelligence though, they have proven to be hopeless.

The loss of life was horrendous. Almost 200 dead. Considering that there were over fourteen hundred wounded, the loss of life could have been much higher.

I am swaying between ETA and a foreign org.

There are elements of both, and the MO doesn't fit either of them prefectly as it often does.

At the moment I am thinking maybe a splinter group a la PIRA.

Seems those Arabs have a penchant for leaving vehicles full of evidence parked near the scene of the crime (sarcasm - 9/11 precedent).

Has anyone else noticed that, since the Saudi compound bombing last year, Al-Qaeda started leaving messages by email with London Based Arab newspapers? Previously they only ever communicated by video tape with Al-Jazeera....curious.

So Spain was in the run-up to an election.....could be a sign of things to come......

Didn't I hear about a month back on some news report that Osama had been captured and then the US denied it? I heard nothing about it after that. Why haven't we seen any more tapes from him in a while? Why the e mails and not the tapes anymore?

Is it possible he was actually captured and we are keeping it under wraps until the right political moment? (October)

Or is it possible that I'm just imagining things?

Thats certaintly a possibility, however, I think Bush would come under heavy criticism from the press once they put two and two together.

Check that link again
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4502950/

Apparently a video tape purported to be from Al-Qaeda claiming responsibilty was found in a rubbish bin.

"The videotape found in a trash bin Saturday night was being analyzed at a police lab in suburban Madrid, a ministry spokesman said. Only police, the intelligence services and a judge have seen it, he added, although it may be released publicly after it has been analyzed completely."

If ever.

It goes back to the same question every time. Who gains?

It appears the stage is also now set for for a round of big brother reforms Patriot Act style. Also from the same link:

Spain’s top selling daily, El Pais, said in an editorial that if an Islamic link to the attacks is proven, “then there ought to be a revision of the security mechanisms, particularly in intelligence, which were incapable of detecting preparations for an attack of such magnitude.”

“That our country, and with it Europe, should be converted into a permanent staging post for mass terrorism, the most outstanding example of which was Sept. 11, calls for measures to be taken that meet the challenge,” the paper added.

Also check out the part about the ETA at the bottom. It appears that the Spanish Government is making the same mistakes the British initially made in Ireland by refusing to negotiate with Sinn Fein. Eventually they had to negotiate to make any headway.
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200304/28/print20030428_115922.html

If the Spanish can get a round of security reforms through as well as tie the ETA to Al-Qaeda et-al via "Islamic links", they can then put anyone away on suspicion of supporting the ETA.

Not everything happening in Spain is about Iraq.

Feel sorry for these people who died in these attempts :(
Today, 3 minutes of silence have been observed. Some cars even stopped on the road.
Alas, I don't think that it's over. France (religion signs "forbidden" in schools) and USA (Irakis war) seem to be the next targets.
