hello exhaust problems

Hey, ok last night i got stuck with a ticket and court date for having an illegal Muffler, not to mention that the cop said my car sounded like shit. in his words, that damn cop. Anyway i have the apex gt dp and n1 catback. so i am looking for a downpipe that i can use a high flow cat with and a catback that still flows nicely but just isn't all to loud or showy. what do you guys think i should get? The silencer works alright but i can definitely feel a power decrease when i have it in also ...

Are you sure it is actually 'illegal' or did he just say it was. I think there is an actual decible limit. I have a homemade strait pipe from the turbo to the strait through muffler (no cat). Mine isn't that loud. Do you have a bullshit tip or something?

RRE short downpipe will allow you a high flow cat.

You'll feel the same power decrease with a smaller catback as the silencer, it's the same concept. Diameter, noise, and power are all directly related. If I were you, i'd just get a quieter muffler, or you could get a 2.5 inch and a relatively quiet muffler if you're not willing to cut into that N1.

Ticket for illegal muffler -- that sounds like BS to me.
Did he mean it was too loud. Did you get this ticket late at night?

If he did not look at the muffler I would replace it with a "street legal" muffler and then goto the judge and show him a couple of webpage printout that show it is that the muffler is street legal and a picture of your muffler that has the company logo on it.

Connecticut H.B. 6402-would establish vehicle emissions standards equivalent to California's.

So it could be the same law but you could have someone else or you call your local PD and see what the law is.

But then I found this...
Connecticut H.B. 5145: Prohibits the sale, use, ownership or installation of a muffler system that lacks interior baffle plates or other effective muffling device, or the use of a gutted or cut out muffler system, or the use of a straight exhaust.

So I guess you could get a ticket for an illegal muffler. That SUCKS dude. :disappoin

yea, i checked it allll out. talked to everyone i could about it and there is nothing i can do. I am not worried that i am going to have a problem with the court because of a modified exhaust but the big problem is passing inspection now.. so pretty much i need to get a downpipe made with a cat, and a muffler welded with a flange that will fit my midpipe. Anyway i will be selling an apexi gt downpipe and n1 exhaust in the near future so hey.. if anyone wants to hit that up :) pm me :rolleyes:

How much you want for it, its the 3" r 2.5" downpipe and exhaust.I WANT IT!!

Make the car quieter. Go to court saying that you bought the car that way, didnt think it was a big deal until you got the ticket. You dont want anymore trouble with the police, so you changed out the exhaust for a "normal" one. Dont say stock, or say anything untrue like that. You'd be surprised how many times you'll get off on good faith for showing a desire to comply with the law. I got out of several BS tickets like this. Worth a shot, if you do make the ehxuast quieter before court.

If you go to a highflow cat, that will help a LOT. If you still want straight through try a dynomax "bullet" race muffler (4" diamter, 3" in/out) in place of the cat as a presilencer. For 30 bucks and some flanges I plan to do the same thing some day. Other poeple I mnentioned this to tried it and said its a good bit quieter, and it wont hurt performance as much as a cat. But, if you are trying to get more legal for inspection anyway, then a cat really might be the way to go. A cop might think a bullet race muffler is a cat, but an inspection tech wont :D

Kevin is right you can get out of a lot of tickets. At least here you can. :)
My friend got a ticket for 49 in a 35, the cop wrote him up for 40 in a 35. (and he had a hole in his exhaust :)) His car was misfiring so he is going to try to use that as an excuse. (He did not get a ticket for the exhaust, the cops here dont give a fuck about exhaust systems. His exhaust is LOUD even w/o the hole)...
Sorry for the long story but try to go to court... you will have a chance.
For the muffler put the silencer in. (as a temporary solution).
