13-Second Car for $10,000

I was recently in another thread where we got on the topic of building a 13-Second Civic for $10,000 or less including the cost of the car. Honda Tuning Magazine recently did a project with an Integra, but they went over by a couple thousand dollars and even then it didn't get into the 13-second territory. It was 14 seconds. They had some other rules like it having to be all-motor and so forth.
If anyone has had success in building a 13-Second daily driven Civic for $10k or less please share your story. Time slips are a plus. If you did it on street tires and without taking out the stereo and other equipment that's even better. And if on top of all that, you did it all-motor, then, my friend you a re a guru!!

Pftt. Easy.
2nd gen HF or std hatch - $2000 tops
1st gen B16 with cable LSD tranny - $1500ish
custom turbo kit - $3500
HX rims with some drag radials - $700
3" custom bent exhaust - maybe $600
You'd still have money left over.. Or you could build the hell out of a SOHC and make it run 13s.

No disrespect, but we've all heard about how you could do it. This forum is for people like me who haven't done it to hear from those people who have done it. I have friends who set out to do something as simple as an engine swap thinking they could do it for a couple thousand dollars and two weeks, but didn't get it done until after spending $3000-$4000 and six months! They probably could have saved themselves time and trouble by asking someone who's done it before what they did, what to go for, what to avoid, and where to go.
Theory and practice are two different things. I've already started my project. So far i've gotten the car (1990 Civic Hatch) for $750 so I think i'm off to a good start. I would like to know from people who have done it and can speak from experience how easy/hard it really was. If a magazine team with all the hookups you can think of had difficulty doing it, its probably not as easy as we might think. Then again, its nowhere near impossible either.

I dont know how many times I have stressed this out to everyone that I talked to.
10k + 13sec = possible !!!!
The thing you guys have to remember is dont get caught up in going to one shop!!!
Shops are in this business to make money!!!
these places will charge anywere between $3000-5000 for a b16swap!!!!! that is overpriced. There is no way in hell you should be paying someone that much when it's become a do it yourself project now. All you have to do is grab some friends and use th AF wisely. Guys it's not impossible to do, now if you live a rural area or were there is not alot of support for imports than you will run into problems. Seriously if any of you have questions let me know, or better yet I have a better Idea give me the 10K and I'll build you a 13 sec car GARANTEED !!!!!!!!!

Humm, yep sounds like disrespect to me.
Its not hard. You can do it yourself if you know about cars, just take your time. For good deals, its always best to look at ebay. Plus i found this site that sells b16a compleate swap for $1K. Make a junkyard/ebay turbo kit for about $1k. and lets say at most $1k for install mounts, parts, etc. AND there you have it under 5k. Im not positive that will run 13s but buils up the block and head for about 2k more and there you have it!!!

10k + 13sec = possible !!!!
Once again. This is not a forum on whether or not it is possible to build a 13-second car for 10k. It is a forum to hear about experiences. mtrujillo: You are the same person I chatted with in the other forum. You said you built a 13-Second car for 10k. Here's your chance to tell us how. Here are some examples:
I found my car on ebay for $2.
I bought the engine for $100 from crackhead jake.
I took it to a machine shop and got it ported, polished and reinforced for another $100.
And then I bought the best turbo kit ever made for $9798.
And wallaa. I run 13's!
By the way, when you buy an engine, make sure it comes with a, b & c because if you don't this could happen.
That's the kinda stuff i'm talking about. When I asked my friend about his swap he didn't complain about how much the shop charged him. I'm going to school for my ASE certs, so I plan to do most of the work myself. But its still good to hear from people who've done it because they might be bale to tell us how to avoid problems. In the Bay Area of CA. there are a lot of shops that will do the job if you can't do it yourself so service costs aren't that high. His B16 swap took six months because he ordered his engine from a bad source. They took his money and made him wait six months for the engine because they had to import it. When it finally arrived it was missing parts, so he had to order them idividually which ended up turning into a nickle & dime situation. This guy had a wealth of advise for me because of all the problems he faced.
He also told me about little things that no one here seems to mention like changing the water pump, timing belt, etc. while the engine is out because its a pain to do it while the engine is in. What about checking the engine to see if its within factory spec before putting it in. This invloves measurements of the bore size to check for taper and out-of-roundness, checking the crank for balance, checking to see if the rods are warped, doing leakdown tests, checking the deck for warpage, etc. The lists of recommendations that I come across never include any of those. Some people will just buy an engine and take it to a shop to have it installed without checking for any of these things. A lot of shops here in the Bay don't even provide engines anymore because they don't want to be responsible for selling a bad engine. One shop I know of will take the engine apart & check it before installation, but for an additional charge.
Maybe if I ask a more specific questions it will help shape the discussion. I'm planning out a B20B turbo setup and I have a few questions for those who have performed the B20B swap:
1. Will the B20B engine bolt up to any cable or hydraulic B-Series tranny?
2. Are there any problems getting it to fit with the stock intake & exhaust manifold?
3. Which mounts will work best? i.e. Hasport, HCP, etc.
4. Is there much room left for a turbo setup without removing the A/C or cutting the subframe?
5. Does the weight & size hurt handling? If so, how much?
6. What do you think of the performance of the engine?

13 sec is easy. Ok first select your block. Day you go with a D series motor. D16Y8 for example. I bought my D16Y8 block bored .20 over, and the D16Y8 head port and polished with oversized valves, for $320 shipped.
Now for internals. Eagle H beam rods- $300, Arias pistons and rings- $420, VAFC-$300, 450cc injectors-$75, turbo cam- $300, clutch-$300~450
Get some small rims for cheap on ebay or junk yard. Some donuts will do. Drop two slicks on the front two tires. Lower the car and put the rear stiff as crap.
Now comes the turbo setup. Custom log style mani $200, T28 turbo- $100-250, JohnnyRaceCar FMIC-$200, BOV-depends on the style/sound you want, Ecternal wastegate if needed- $200.
Now I'm not sure where this will get you, but it should be in the 13's atleast. When the track opens up I'll let you know for sure. Oh and it's only about 3k. Depends largely on how much you can do and if you know where to get your stuff.

Jeez, maybe I should take some lessons from the NOOB about what I should be talkin about in these threads. Thats another thing ahzab33, learn what youre talkin about. If youre gonna come in and start actin like you own the place, you best start usin the right vocab. These are threads....the whole '88-'91 Civic / CRX page, now thats a forum, AF.com has a whole list of forums...but these individual topics are called THREADS, as shown by the button, thats right...the "NEW THREAD" button... :banghead:
Anyways, wish Kris was here to answer your ?'s regarding the B20 setup, but how bout doin a little searchin first. Maybe that might help a bit...Its the button at the top of the screen(that would be the box type thing youre staring at now), and the button, if I'm not mistaken, should be blue letters, very easy to see. If you need more help with that, maybe you can ask someone to take a screenshot of it to show you where to look. :uhoh:

96 d16y7 block, 95 d16z6 head... $350
custom turbo kit.......~$950
running 13.9@98mph for $3000...priceless
13 seconds is easily obtainable for $3000

for $10,000 you better be deep in the 12s atleast

91 crx dx with b20/vtec, gsr cams, type-r intake manifold, dc sport 4-1 header, and aem fuel pressure regulator. Low 13 sec. car on street tires before intake manifold and 4-1 header, maybe hitting high 12's now, havent been to the track to run it yet. Car is daily driven and spent under $5000 on it. It can defiantly be done for under $10,000.

i have an 88 STD hatch. bought it for 250 bucks, didnt run, and the interior was crap.
bought a 91 CRX Si for 1200 bucks, it was totalled, but it had a b16a in it and some other assorted good parts. heres a list of what i got for 1200:
b16a1
S1 tranny
PR3 ECU
Skunk2 intake manifold
neuspeed header
AEM fuel rail
AEM pressure regulator
short ram intake
tokico struts and coilovers
neuspeed strut bar
neuspeed lower tie bar
hasport mount kit
hasport shift linkage
hasport sub harness
MSD plug wires
also used the suspension from the CRX, rear discs, sway bars, etc
since then i have added the following:
93 GSR YS1 tranny : 200 bucks
ACT street strip clutch set : 300 bucks
integra front knuckles and brakes:50 bucks
integra bored out throttle body: 10 bucks
MSD dizzy cap and blaster2 coil: 50 bucks
energy suspension master bushing set: 75
energy suspension trailing arm bushings: 20
i also rebuilt the engine myself when i was in mechanic school, and the total cost was 500 bucks. i ported the head myself at the school.
rebuilt the YS1 tranny when i was working at a nissan dealership, and it only cost me 50 bucks for synchros.
all the work is done by me, so theres no labor cost. theres more money in the car, but its cosmetic stuff like racing seats and steering wheel and interior parts, as well as two sets of wheels. wont include the 18s, cause they dont make the car faster
14 inch 3rd gen prelude wheels with generic directional tires:200 bucks (i actually traded the guy a set of prelude strut bars for them, but thats how much the bars are worth)
now, im sure you are wondering if i ever hit a 13? well, i havent driven the setup in the 88 yet, i drove it in my 90 HB, but with a stock clutch and the S1 tranny, and bald tires. i also had an o2 sensor problem, and VTEC never worked. i hit low 15s that way. i expect that with everything corrected, and with the lighter chassis, i should definitely get low 14s, and maybe break 13.9999999999 once in a while.
grand total, 2905.
and a set of cams and an AEM EMS are in the plans soon too. so if you want to add another 12-1500 bucks, just to be safe, but i can get both for lower.

90 dx with blown motor for 25$
79 pontiac bonneville with posi trac (very rusty) 350$
assorted steel and such 200$
gas/wire for the wire feed.. and some welding rods 250$
engine build up for 1000$ with edelbrock intake/carb and performer cam kit etc.. some hooker headers open with turndowns.
some nickel and dime stuff for 200$
why not just do that?
that's $2025 (3k tops) for a RWD 400+hp V8 4g. (prolly more of a drifter than a drag car cause the weight isn't really over the rearend hehe)
if you know how and really want to do something.. you can pretty much do anything :)

4thgen civic or 2nd gen CRX -- 2000$
Big brake Kit -- 1200$ + 600$
H22a Motor and LSD tranny 2500$ + 1000$
Header, Intake and Exaust 1200$
-------------------------------------
total 8500$ use the extra 1500$ to do rim and tires or other mods like cams, P&P ... ect.
this is an example of a car that would be fast as hell but would handle like ass... but you wanted a fast car you said nothing about handeling :evillol:

Good stuff! Good luck on getting into the 13's. Let us know how well you did once you hit the track. I wish some of the other "tuners" on this "thread" had a bit more to say on how to build a car rather than lecturing me on the difference between a forum and a thread. How gay is that?! Ricers! :grinno:
bought a 91 CRX Si for 1200 bucks, it was totalled, but it had a b16a in it and some other assorted good parts. heres a list of what i got for 1200 .....
i also rebuilt the engine myself when i was in mechanic school, and the total cost was 500 bucks. i ported the head myself at the school.
rebuilt the YS1 tranny when i was working at a nissan dealership, and it only cost me 50 bucks for synchros.
all the work is done by me, so theres no labor cost. theres more money in the car, but its cosmetic stuff like racing seats and steering wheel and interior parts, as well as two sets of wheels. wont include the 18s, cause they dont make the car faster
Good stuff! Good luck on getting into the 13's. Let us know how well you did once you hit the track.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not even going to pretend I don't enjoy seeing the power of a good muscle car, but it's jiust not that big of a challenge for me. It's too easy to build a fast muscle car and I like the adjustability of the sport compacts a lot more. With gas prices at $2.35 a gallon where I live I would hate to get stuck with a 3500 lbs. gas guzzler. At least with a sport compact I can adjust my fuel settings back to a toned-down, gas-saving four cylinder.

Well there WERE people telling you what to do since u asked but then u got all ass hurt when we were only talking about it and didn't personally do the build-up or have the car. Big frickin deal. And if u dont hit 13 seconds with 10k into your car, and mainly engine, then something is probably wrong.

Yeah, there must be something really wrong if the guys @ Honda Tuning magazine who could get a $2500 Integra, B20B with a GSR head ported & polished, headers, hi-flow cat, a Hondata ECU, short-shifter w/ a GSR tranny and still couldn't hit 13's. Go and check out the article.
As for you. If I wanted to hear theory about how to hit 13's I would stand in the parking lot with all the ricers at my school. You're probably just like them. I bet you're the kind of "tuner" who cuts his springs, puts a wing on the back of his car, and puts a loud muffler on the end of a 1 1/2" exhaust piping, along with about 50 stickers and think you gotta fast car. I bet you're one of those guys who drive around town with a f*cked up ass body kit looking like a giant darth vader helmet on wheels, huh. The only thing 13 about your car are stock 13" wheels your still driving on. Fag. Go get your asshole stroked and bored .020 for $10 and maybe you'll be able to run your gay ass down the block in 13-seconds.

You can get into 13's and you could do that with a thing called FORCED INDUCTION. They got good numbers, hell great numbers (what low-mid 14?) and if you are looking to stay naturally aspirated those would be really good numbers. However if you go with a swap and turbo i'm sure you will be able to hit 13's.
And what's w/ all the hate man. No im not just a ricer who goes around my school and revs and shit, im not that stupid. My cars not the shit and i know its not. Also, go check out my cardomain site and you'll see that 1) i dont have cut springs, I have coilovers 2) i have no wing whatsoever 3) I do have a muffler but its attached to a 2.5" cat-back exhaust system WITH a resonator and its not loud at all 4) and i have 1 sticker on each of my rear 1/4 windows (2 in total) and its a grey AEM sticker which you should be able to see in the pix from the aforementioned cardomain site 5) i have no body kit, all stock body components even though i would like some FACTORY fenders since mine have a few dings and last of all number 6) I dont have 13" rims if you would have seen the pix you would have known.
Sorry for the long post guys, but just had to get some things straightened out. And in case you can't find the WWW button on the bottom of my posts...here is a link to my cardomain site...http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/329010/2 Laters.

if you cant hit 13s with 10,000 there is something wrong. yes its true. with 10,000, you could get into the 13s naturally aspirated with a 1.5L non VTEC.
anybody who says they have $20,000 or some crazy shit into their car and *isnt* running 12s or 11s is a fucking retard.
btw, idiot, its not theory. anybody with 1/2 a brain and $10,000 could easily build a 13 second civic.
Hell, you could *pay* an overpriced shop to build you a 13 second car for $10,000. Like i said, give me $3,000 and i'll build a 13 second car.

let me guess.. you're the type of person who sits around with his "tuner" friends, who spent $700 on an RSR exhaust and $500 on a JDM intake and theorizes on how to build a 10 second car. If you cant figure out how to build a 13 second car on 10,000 bucks, maybe you need to stick to fart cans and JDM ashtrays.
stop whining, pussy.

I dont know who the fuck you think you are, but the two people you were just talkin to about being "ricers," are nowhere near bein ricers. For your information, like you even deserve this...both Mike and I have invested money in new springs or coils for our cars. Both Mike and I hate spoilers, and the only ones we personally would ever put on the back of our cars are the stock lookin ones with the LED brake light. We both want a clean and stock look, nothing too outrageous. The only stickers that Mike has are two AEM stickers, one on each of his rear 1/4 windows, because he actually has an AEM CAI system in his car. Neither of us have body kits, we're still stock, and the only reason I'm still on 13's asshole is because I'm out of a job right now and can't afford to put 17's on. Maybe not all of us can afford to drop bills on our cars all the time like we'd want to. It's called bein a kid and havin a fuckin life as well as tryin to mod your car. You started attackin Mike and sayin shit about him that was directed at me, figure out who the fuck youre tryin to talk to and attack before you do it. All that shits gonna do is piss of the mods and if you do it enough, you can get your ass tossed outta here.
Listen, you keep talkin big like you know all your shit, but that raises the question, what the fuck are you doin here then? I suggest that if you want help from people who really do know what theyre talking about, you should come at them with a different approach, rather than calling them "ricers" and insulting their cars and its stupid. Like Siz said, stop the fightin, this is dumb, I have other things to post about, helpin other people. The last thing I want to do is come here and tell you off for bein such a fuckin jerk.
LESSON: Be nicer to your forum elders...you might need help from them later, and they might not want to give it to you if youre a dick. Ahzab33, I got no beef with you, other than you attacked me and the one thing I care about most. These guys are like family to me, and when some ignorant, sniveling little shit talker comes in and tries to run things, I gotta step in. No hard feelings tho, just learn to keep your fuckin mouth shut if you dont know what the hell youre talkin about. :nono:
One last thing, before I go...I apologize to all that have had to read this and think to themselves about how this place could just be a place to learn and appreciate cars, not to fight over stupid shit like this. I hate typin it so I can imagine how much it can be annoying to read if you arent involved.

Come on man. Are you for real?.... Dude, go back and read my first post. I DO have the car. What pisses me off is when I come on here looking for advice and I get slammed by "AF Enthusiasts" for being a "AF Newbie" as if that really means something in the real world. Some people on here really do know their stuff. But, I would say the majority of people on here are just ricers.
When I say ricers I mean people who not only don't know about how to make a fast car, but don't care. They give Honda tuners a bad name. You should see all the posers at my school standing next their cars, revving their engines. Then all of a sudden a Cobra or a Camaro SS will enter the lot and everything gets quiet. Nobody ever dares challenge those guys, but they sure do sound pretty hard revving their engines in the lot. I see more serious tuners driving Supras and EVOs than Hondas. It's a shame because I love Hondas, but there are too many posers and ricers out there.
If you are not a ricer, then don't take offense because i'm not talking about you. But, if you're one of these guys who'd rather talk about the difference between a forum and a thread, then maybe you oughta take up computers or something. Because you don't belong anywhere near a car.

yaaaaay internet crap talking. For all we know you are one of the previously mentioned high school'ers revving their engines and what not.
Also, you might see more "serious" tuners driving those expensive cars cuz not your average Joe can afford one. Civics are cheap and easy to get ahold of and lots are used for family cars, some for being riced out, and some for making fast. The world doesn't cater to your every wish so if you dont like it, dont let it bother you.
For every good thing there is a bad thing, there will be serious people about speed and there will be ricers...its life, GET OVER IT.

My guess is he's a high school kid that doesn't even have a car or any real first hand experience behind a steering wheel and a tree at all.. Just talk about how fast his car will one day be....
You guys got me all wrong, so let me help you out. I am a car enthusiast like all of you. I have built a 2.0L Dodge Neon engine from the block up that was used in real race car. Those are the engines we train on at the school I go to. My teacher builds Chevy racing engines for a living and used to work for Comptech. I'm working on getting all eight of my ASE certs. I'm 25, I have a steady job making decent money and I have two cars that I own outright. The Civic is a project car that i'm building for fun because I find enjoyment in building my own custom car.
As for coming here to learn something, that is what I came here for, but I gotta tell you... You guys aren't too welcoming. This should be a place for Honda enthusiasts to come to learn from each other, but so far it seems more like a pissing competition.

At least with a sport compact I can adjust my fuel settings back to a toned-down, gas-saving four cylinder.
you could get good mileage with a 400hp 350 if you dont' drive it hard.. and it prolly woudln't weight but 400lbs more than the stock civic.
and challenge? what is greater challenge than making a hatchback civic into a V8 RWD car?
it's nearly all fabrication ;)
