There is a test you can perform for visual wear indication/blowby of the oil control rings:
- Unscrew and remove the oil filter cap (opens a giant crankcase ventilation and removes that as a possible symptoms of burning oil smoke in the exhaust)
- Warm the engine up to operating temperature
- Throttle the engine to 4000rpm and hold for 30 seconds
If the engine is burning billows of blue-ish (oil) smoke, then there's some blow-by between the crankshaft and the two combustion chambers somewhere. More than likely, if the engine is originaly from the 80's/early 90's, then the older Mazda oil control ring o-rings are suspect. They changed the type of o-ring they used later on down the road because of this.
