Spark Plugs

How do I change the spark plug behind the steering column? Must the engine be raised to access it?

On the s-10 series blazers, late 80's to current, you need to deconnect the steering column in the engine compartment. My Relative who worked for GM as a tech did it once for me. Took him only a couple of minutes. Without taking off the steering shaft, you (if you already haven't done it like me) risk cross threading the cylinder next to that pesky spark plug. There should be only one bolt (??) to remove on the shaft and then the collar should slide up. Needless to say, make absolutely sure that the steering system does not move while the collar is off. might want to mark everything to make sure is all goes back together the right way.

if you don't wanna unhook the steering you can usually turn the socket with a wrench not much fun i don't know what those F#@@ing engineers were thinking.

you can get to plugs 3/5 thru the wheel well on the gen 1, even easier if you jack upthe front and let the front wheel hang. dont disconnect any steering shafts

You DO NOT need to disconnect the steering shaft. Jack up the front and take off the tire, you can access the plugs through the wheelwell. That goes for both sides.

Ok, I just changed my plugs. (99 Blazer) and I questioned a couple people about this same issue. They said to disconnect the steering. I didn't like the sound of that so I tried everything I could and I eventually found the best thing for me was one of those 1/2 flex-head wrench. The kind where the head doesn't rachet or anything it basically just flips 180 degrees. Looks like a ratchet handle with a little 1/2inch nub on there. That worked for me. Through the wheel wells of course.

I change my plugs on my 95 on sunday all plugs were simple except the one behinde the steering arm.... placed the socket on the plug and used a wrench to turn it... toook 15 minutes... to remove... when i replaced the new one i use a five inch or so long fuel line placed it on the end of the plug to guide into place and used this to tighten the plug... for complete tighing i use the socket with the wrench...

total time about 30 minutes...

I just unbolted the steering box from the frame rail and dropped it down. Took just a few minutes.

i'm such a newbie...i just changed the spark plugs and distibutor cap on my 89 s10 4.3l and can't figure out the order to put the plugs on the damn cap...Help!!!! thx

firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2 drivers side from front to rear are 1, 3, 5. passenger side front to rear is. 2, 4, 6.
the rotation of the distributor is clockwise. if you line up the timing marks on the front pulley while on the compression stroke the rotor will point to the terminal for cylinder #1 on the cap. sometimes it's labled on the cap. good luck
