I have a 1997 jetta 2.0L. It has 106,200 miles. I have a cam,cam gear, underdrive crankshaft pulley, Comp chip, big bore intake, and cat back exhaust.. recentally I had a header put on.. i have had it for about a week or so and Now I have a check engine light on.. got it in to the shop I work at and pulled a P1583 code.. it says Idle limit at adaption???
i have had this code before, reset it and it stayed out for 6 months or so.. now it will only stay off for 5-6 miles.. mitchell on demand says start with changing the oil as it gets diluted???? any ideas??????? what do I do?????????

Had same error on mine - read earlier in this forum to clean the throttle body

Took mine off and saw that it was pretty gunked up - cleaned it with TB cleaner and tooth brush - put it back on and started the car and it raced like crazy because it remembers where the TB was set last time the car was run - it'll take a little while for it to correct to the proper idle.

Haven't gone to autozone to get my code cleared yet wanted to let it get the correct idle and to settle down first - I'm suspecting that the problem is cleared up.

Diluted engine oil is the easiest to check/fix. If that doesn't fix it there could be a number of other possibilities. Cleaning the throttle body won't hurt. Vacuum leaks & exhaust leaks can cause it also. Bad fuel injectors are another possibility. Mitchell goes into some throttle valve control module & wiring tests. Lastly you would replace the throttle valve module.

I did finally goto autozone after cleaning the TB and had them clear the 1582 code and it stayed away this time.

I changed my oil at work and fixed the vaccume tube that goes into the TB(it kept falling out and my car ran like SHIT). So far the ses light hasnt come back on yet?? we'll see. I also was checking into some neuspeed injectors?? and advise?
