Will 1999 528i flash Fault Codes?

I've had my first BMW for a week now, and my check engine lamp turned on today. Is there a way to make the car flash the fault codes related to the warning lamp so I could tell if it's a real problem or not? I don't want to take it in for a service charge or to be led into labor/parts costs to repair something unnecessary. I know that a filler cap can cause this problem. The car runs fine.

I guess there isn't and I also guess the correct answer is "No, you need an OBD pocket PC to read fault codes". So for all of you with the same question, that's the answer. Now, if only I could answer all of life's questions myself...

Take it to an Auto Zone or similar automotive store, most will read the codes free of charge and tell you what they mean.
If you put gas in the car with the engine running, this will set off the CE lamp. If this is the reason, it will reset itself after a few days.
