is it bad for your N20 system or your car to have it installed and drive around with it open, with nitrous in the lines;ready to race??

no...that's why the solenoids are there. I don't think it's the best idea, ESPECIALLY since i'm 99% sure it's illegal to drive around on the street with the bottle open.
Also, it'd be best to have a purge valve, so when you close the tank you can get rid of the nitrous in the line.
The only negative thing i see happening would come from an improper installation of the system or a faulty something or other.
One last thing, there are remote bottle openers so that you can open and close the bottle by just pressing a button. And i'm not sure, but that may constitute as driving with an open bottle as far as the law is concerned.
hope this helps.

I usually leave mine closed (remote bottle opener), and purge the extra spray out of the lines. Keep in mind that you have over 1000psi pushing up against those expensive solenoids - causing premature wear/failure.
