Fuel Pump? 2000 won't start

My 2000 Cavalier won't start. It ran fine Sunday and then when I went to start it Monday morning it won't. It acts like it wants to start, but just won't catch. It has good spark, there's gas in the tank and we changed the fuel filter. Still nothing. We think it may be the fuel pump, but when we turn the key we can hear it kick on for 2 seconds, but no gas came out when we had the filter off. Should gas have come out? Do you think it's the fuel pump or could it be something else. Please help!!! I'm without a car.
You can email me at suzyq1881@yahoo.com or post here. Thanks soooooo much.

how much gas is in the tank?? the fuel gages have been known to have problems on these things. if theres gas for sure and you hear the pump run but no gas comes out like you said then the pump is screwed up or the line to the pump in the tank popped off somehow. theres a pressure test port on the fuel rail it looks like a tire valve if you press it a healthy spray of fuel should come out.

If you can hear the fuel pump kick in when you turn the key to run you just replaced a good fuel pump

sometimes a pump will run but won't build up pressure because the rotor is damaged or the housing leaks.
