Help finding this: Dead guy on rocket car at autobahn

I have done many searches for this, but I can't find anything about it. It was in Road & Track, so I am assuming it is a credible story. From what I can remember, it went something like this:

A guy decided to top-speed test his car (maybe a rocket car) on the Autobahn. He went fast, but a car got in his way and he crashed into the back of them going what I think was 300 mph, dragging the both of them. They ended it by saying that he also holds the record for the fastest quarter mile completed by two automobiles.

Can anyone give me more info about this?

It is true. But it happened when the autobahn was firt built. I know that he had made one successful run, and on his second attempt is when he was blown off the track by wind.

Is there anything else you can tell me about this event so I can find an article on Google? So far, nothing is turning up. You would think a lot of news places would have "this day in 1920" type of things.

Also, I think you might be talking about the Rosemeyer guy. He tried twice, dying on the second run, but never hit another car (to my knowlegdge. Nothing I can find on the net has yet to prove this wrong). Is this correct or not?

I can't recall his name. And you are correct, he didn't hit another car. The road i believe was still not open to the public when he made his runs. Crosswinds were the cause of his car flying off the road. Sorry I can't be more help.

No, I've heard the 'old' JATO car thing plenty of times. This was a different story entirely, other than the part about a super-fast car (which may or may not have had a rocket). I can't remember the details, but it was not this story.

i cant belive i read all 8 pages of that JATO Story. It was actually quite good. It really sparked my interest. I wonder what ever really did happen to that Impala...

It was rosemeyer.....he was driving a streamlines auto union, I believe (may have been the mercedes, but I think it was the auto union).
It was an aluminum bodied/engined car, really streamlines for the day. Unfortunately they didnt understand aerodynamics, and, the car wasnt stable at that speed and flipped, killing him.
It wasnt a rocket car, just an awesome car.
