I have an 87 corolla fx hatchback with a hole in the block. I decided I didn't want to send it to the junkyard because it is still in pretty good condition.
My question is, what other engines will fit in this car? It has a 1.6 liter SOHC right now with a 5 speed transaxle. Can anyone tell me what other engines will fit without major modification, and preferably keep the original transaxle. I don't have a lot of money so this would be a salvage yard engine.
If I could fit in a DOHC engine with a little more power and fuel injection it would be nice, but if its going to be difficult and costly then I don't want to mess with it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well if you want fuel injection you'll have to change the computer and wiring harness. I would just find another 4af to put in it. For more power just do the normal header, air intake, and exhaust. With carbueration you should check out putting on dual carbs. Major power upgrade.

IF you are serious about going twin cam (4ag family of motors) you would basically need a wrecked GTS Ae92 or FX. then swap everything over to do with the motor including the fuel tank.Or buy a engine/ecu tranny package in the end this would have more potential than buying another sohc if your after performance.
