I have a 99 silverado and I cant turn the headlights off at all once it is dark out. I understand that it has an automatic system, but once there on , there on for good??

Try this out:

NOTE: (For US application only, Prohibited in Canada (RPO Z49)) You may, for the current ignition on cycle, turn off the DRL and the Automatic Headlamp (AHL) feature by following the steps below:

1. The ignition is in the Run position.
2. Press the dome lamp defeat switch 4 times. After the 4th press of the switch the chime will sound informing you the procedure is complete. Turning the ignition off and then on will place the DRL and AHL back in the automatic mode. This does not apply to some early built pickups.

After you do this try you SHOULD be able to turn your headlights off.

On the '99 I had, if you wanted to sit parked with the engine running and have no headlights on, you could put the tranny in park, cut the key off, slightly depress the parking brake, then restart, and the lights would stay off. Seems like they would come back on when I released the park brake. Had a friend that figured out a wire or fuse to pull to completely disable the auto lights, but don't remember what he did.

While on this subject, I have a gripe with GM on new silverado, they say that standard feature on all models is when doors are locked if you pull door handle inside lights come on, I and no one at GM or dealer can figure out, anyone got suggestion?
