2004 Range Rover transmission and transfer case

I would like to know if anyone knows the technical side of the new 2004 RR transmission and transfer case function with particular emphasis on the fluids within this system. The transfer sump hold approximately 13 cups of the BMW part # oil and suppose this leaked out. How would this affect the system. Is there a sensor that informs the driver of a malfunction in this system? The sticker on the transfer case says it is a life time oil but says when replacing it to use the BMW part #. I've been told there is about 9 quarts of oil in other parts of this system so where is it and how does the sump oil interface with the function of this system. Thanks, petethib
