K&N filter for EVO question

Well I opted to buy a K&N filter for the EVO (Sucker costed me $69.99 from Autozone, wheras my Camaros was only a little over $50). They have a K&N typhoon intake filter kit for $200+, but i've heard that Mitsubishi will do almost anything to get out of honoring a car's warranty. Is the Typhoon kit that much better? Also will i see any gains from the drop in filter? I'm kinda confused as to alot of these metal sleeved elbowed air intake systems, cause when I added it to my former 00 Integra GS-R (the one that got totalled years ago), it seemed to lose horsepower. I've heard that the air in the engine bay is especially hot, so my question is wouldn't that hot air for the typhoon kit translate into reduced power for my EVO?

it doesn't really matter TOO much on an evo, because the EVO is turbo'd.

The compressor wheel of the turbo is going to make any sort of air u pull in hotter anyhow, and the intercooler will reduce the intake air temp. So it really does not matter.

Not sure about the typhoon, but on most DSMs the k&n adds a little less than 5 hp. Not sure about your EVO, but it's probably close.

Like in almost every other car.. I really doubt just the drop in filter would do much. I say save that money for future mods or gas... currently around $2.33 in souther CA.. :disappoin

i have no idea about the typhoon question, but i can tell u some really good ways to mod your evo. To begin, you should consider a Vishnu ecu or some type of ecu reflash because the one currentley residing in your Evo is crap. Your stock ecu goes lean and rich all over the place, so this is an area in much need of an imporvement. This upgrade will probably void your warrenty, but it isn't noticable unless the technician has to do some kind of work on the ecu. If warrenty fears steer you away, I recommend a downpipe (XS engineering). If a downpipe is too expensive go with a normal intake system and a set of new injectors. Putting an intercooler on your evo will give it decent horsepower gains, but the torque will go way down. Another good upgrade is an exhaust system. Hope this help you out in some way. good luck.

i was all over the place in that post, but i am late for work. fuck it

don't waste your money on a drop in filter. they hardly do anything. get a burschur racing kit. it comes with a apexi SAFC II with settings, a new BOV not the cheap plastic stock one that leaks past 19psi. a down pipe, a 3 inche exhuast, and a cone filter. the gains on average are around 100whp. and it cost around 2K. not a bad deal for 100-110whp

Ahhh i'm kinda looking for mild upgrades for this car. I think I learned about over modding cars with the LS1 (Void warranty). I don't need that much more power. I will just get a catback exh., K&N filter, and a Vishnu XFlash reprogram for the stock ECU (I believe those are easy to take out). I do apprecaite the advise though. No need for me to go smoking Z06 anytime in the near future.

in all honesty, you should (and don't consider this a flame) consult with other evo owners, not a bunch of internet bench racers (myself included).

there are websites specifically for your car, and you'll find a ton more information there, as opposed to asking people who don't actually own the car (myself included).

get the drop in filter just for the breathing factor... dont bother with a CAI (unless you want louder sound) seeing how its a turbo thats what you have an intercooler for...personally i'd get a turbo back as opposed to a catback (espeically if you have a cat in your downpipe like i do)unless emission is an issue. if you're going to vishnu to get it re-flashed let me know i would love to see a re-flashed EVO (fairly new so not a lot rolling around) with an exhaust

well if you want info you can go to www.evolutionm.net so this is where you can get all your questions answered.

Thanks TatII. I already wentb there before (You provided me with a link to it, remember?). Sometimes it takes a long time for them to get to my questions. Oh well. I will have the panel filter by Wednesday, and the auditor already gave me a check for the car repairs (Actually more money then I am being charged by the body shop).

Yea, what he said.

well acording to shiv from visnu a open air filter element will hurt, he claims that the stock box is more than enough

about warranty its tricky, technically anything can void it as long as they can prove(they actually have to prove this - its their responsability) that the part caused the failure. For example if they can prove that an intake or an exaust caused the car to run lean and detonate they can refuse warraty claims on the engine( this is very unlikelly but i've used as an example)

But anyway the best mods you could do right now are an exaust and a reflash/piggyback

the xede from vishnu is a very good pice of technology and alows the end user freadom of tuning (so if you're into that get it) it comes with a harness so you can just plug it in. I don't think a dealer can tell you had one installed if you remove it beforehand which should be easy to plug in and out

another option would be a reflash, dynoflash sounds to be the best and of course if you use bushur stages then use the special bushurflash

I tend to disagree with TATII on the use of a safcII since it has no timing control and the torque curve is much worse than with the bushurflash....david bushur actually said that

btw the tuners claim that flashes are not detectable by dealerships but i've always wondered if that is true or not
