Under ordanariary(sp) conditions no... If your trying to use it for a brake, while setting a light, yes. It will evently wear it out faster....

You will because ur causing vibration and friction which will wear out the clutch more. Just use the clutch normally: release and give gas at the same time.

I understood it as: He was asking about "burning" up the clutch, not wearing it out. They are two totally different conditions...
Yes, the clutch will wear, but that is considered normal wearing, not burning it up...

oh my bad, but it will still "wear" out the clutch, burning the clutch will still wear out ur clutch.

the clutch will burn if you keep letting it slip like rocking the car at a red light. :)

so lets say that i'm at a stop sign that's on a hill, and i use the friction point to stand there and idle, will that burn the clutch up?

There is still a major differance... If I were to intall a brand new clutch, then break it in like your suppose too. Then start abusing right way with power stalls, ect... until it gets burned. Has that "worn" out the clutch like you find in daily wear, no. The materil used on the clutch, has been cooked/burned by the heat of friction. Not worn out by having thousands of miles put on it...
Yes you did "wear" out the clutch by abusing it. Buuttt thats not techinally(sp) what really happend. When it gets torn apart, it will become quit evident that there was tremondous heat build up, which would not occur under daily driving conditions.
If I were a tennager and had been abusing the family car's clutch. You bet "I" would tell my parents that it was "worn" out. Not that I had burned it up, showing off to the peeps in the parking lot. All the time hoping the shop does not call, and tell them what they have found upon tearing it down.... :lol2:

you still reduce the life of the clutch either way

Not trying to be a smart-alec... Is there any OTHER way to start off than letting the clutch out and giving it some gas ? What'd I miss here... Of course there is some wear, this as you described it is the 'minimal' wear scenario, minimal engine revving and a moderate clutch release speed. My '92 Civic is almost at 150,000 miles, original clutch. Every time you start your car, you are 'wearing' it out, perhaps slowly, but its all wear, stuffs rubbing together, temperature cycling, etc...
On a hill, I lock the car in place with the emergency brake rather than using the friction point... Same with when I trailered my boat with a 5-spd tranny (not the Civic), you lock it in place with the brake (good practice anytime u-r around water). Rev engine, begin clutch release, note when RPM begin to drop (its engaging) and pop the brake. Again ,this is under a significant load (towing), on a steep incline, with water behind you. Ya that is quite a bit of 'wear' on the clutch for a second or so...
Peace,
Z
