My VR6 Jetta, 95 won't go. I turn the key and the engine turns, but the car won't start. I checked the fuel and there is fuel to the injectors,. Checked the timing belt and it is working fine, not only that but I changed it not so long ago! fuel pump has also been checked. I think it might be my computer. Has anyone experienced ths with their vehicles?

You can check for engine codes without a scan tool since your car is OBD-I. Find the diagnostic connector beside the ashtray and with the ignition on connect a jumper wire between pin 4 (top row fourth from left) and pin 15 (bottom row second from right) for about 3 seconds then remove. The check engine light will flash any four digit codes. One flash, pause, two flashes, pause, one flash pause, three flashes, long pause & flash seperator would be code 1213. On some vehicles it will flash all codes, on others you will have to reconnect the jumper for 3 seconds to advance to the next code. Code 4444 is no problems found. Post any codes found for an explanation of problem.

When would a I know when the diagnostic cycle has been completed? How many codes should I get from doing this process?

On some models (I believe '94's) it would begin repeating the codes over again, then you know you've got them all. Others end with a 4444 code. The number of codes you get depends on what's wrong. If you get a lot (more than 4 different codes) I would clear the codes, then try to start the car & hope new codes set. Then re-check the codes. To clear the codes on a '95, which should have ended with a 4444 code, turn the ignition off, insert the jumper as described, then turn the ignition on. After about 3 seconds with the ignition on disconnect the jumper. That should clear the codes. You can then reconnect the jumper & see if any codes are still there as some may remain due to a problem.

Boschmann, I tried several times the procedure you explained to me, and I was unable to get any kind of code out of the OBD. My brother even helped me with running a circuit through all the pins and the only one that I got a circuit out of was the bottom pin last to the right of the OBD. I would like to test my CPU but I don't know where it is located. Do you know where the CPU in a 95 VR6 Jetta is located?
Thanks for your help so far.

When you turn the key to the on position does the check engine light come on then go off, or go off while cranking? What do you mean by running a circuit through all the pins? DO NOT connect the jumper to any other wires in the connector as ECM damage can occur.

I turned the key to the on position but the light would not go out. I tried to crank the engine and while I did it the light still stayed on. I tested the pins with a light tester to see if I was getting any kind of electrical signal out of the pins. By the way I also found where the ECU is located. Right now I am thinking of taking that thing out and have it tested. What do you recomend?

I was re-reading your post & noted you replaced a belt. I take it you are talking about the accessory drive belt, as VR6's use timing chains. Did you check for spark? When you turn the key to on do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds, then run again while cranking? I don't know of anyone who can test your ECM, unless you plan to put it into another identical car to see if it works. What is the production date of your car? If it's late '95 it may be an OBD-II vehicle & therfore cannot be checked as I outlined. Otherwise I would concentrate on getting any codes, it's fine that the check engine light dosen't go out. Did you use a jumper wire, like a paper clip or something to connect the two pins I mentioned to check for codes?

Well after much trying and burning my eye-lashes reading the Bentley (yes I bought it) service manual, I opted to do the old American trick, I kicked the tires(well actually I just kept on cranking the engine hoping to drain the battery), and would you believe it, the damn thing started. I still don't know what cause the car to stop running, which is why the car its now at the mechanics. Yes, I have thrown the towel. I am waiting to find out what the mechanic reads out of the scanning tool. I begin to suspect that it was the damn fuel pump or the sending unit that was warning me of its pending demise. Boschmann you were right, my motor mounts were broken, they are being replaced. I want to thank you for all your help, too bad I could not get the mystery solved, but hey! there will be other battles. as soon as the mechanic solves the mystery, if he solves it! I will post it.
