You bought a rotary. Those are built for horsepower - not fuel economy.

intake, exhaust, and air fuel controller can get you a couple more miles to the gallon, but it'd be expensive and really not worth it unless you wanna give it some more power anyways

Tune up! New plugs, wires, O2 sensor, ignition like you said, fuel filter et cetera. I plan on doing this in the summer seeing as mine is pretty shitty. I got 300 miles on a tank and was thrilled. :(

i hear ya man... i usually get like between 200 and 250 miles on a tank with mine with regular driving... if i drive it hard its terrible... i'm gonna do a tune up as soon as i get my first paycheck from my new job at quizno's...mmmmmmm toasty

Well I do a lot of town driving. My town is filled with twisty roads and hills, absolute BLISS. And I tend to redline often. ;)

i live right outside of a small town near a lot of flat farmland... there are many winding roads here too, i love takin turns at 90 then pushin 135 on straightaways. there is one not a mile from where i live on a road where no one ever goes. it is like a mile long and perfectly flat... my friends and i have been known to go there on saturdays and see whose car is the fastest. my friend's 240 was the fastest until i got the rx7, now i blow him away :smokin:

I dont think he was trying to be an asshole. If you want to see asshole, check out some of my posts.
The best way to get better gas mileage would be to get a haltech or microtech and tune it properly.

I usually get 300-320 on my non-turbo, and I drive hard about 5 times a week at the minimum, plus I live near a lake, as in like 200 yards away... roads around lakes are AWESOME, plus no one drives them so its even better, and the best part, its on the way to work for me so I can have fun right before and right after work, makes for a good working invironment

First off, I do not condone this type of driving behavior. it is very dangerous for untrained drivers, especially while not on track. So take it to a track.
How can you complain about fuel economy when you are out flying through the countryside @ 135 mph. what rpm are you at under load when accelerating near 135mph? that is where your fuel economy is going.
different ignition isn't going to help. the 2nd gens already have pretty much the best ignition possible.
Spark-plugs, proper wires (magnacors), and an new o2 sensor will help.
Check your timing. make sure the CAS is set where it should be.
remove your injectors and either buy new, or have yours professionally cleaned and blueprinted. check for vaccum leaks... do you still have your stock restrictive exhaust (including the cats) on the car? how about the rest of your ancilary emmissions BS?
How are your mixture screws set? where is your idle? what about your BAC and thermowax, are they set right or working properly?
DO you still have both sets of throttle plates?
How much time does your car spend idling? Believe it or not, our cars waste more gas idling than under load at 5K RPM.
what octane are you using?
what pressure is your fuel?
have you checked to see if the screw has back out of the pressure damper?
Sounds like we may have alot of potential here..

Upgraded ignition for a better spark could help a little.

I wasn't making fun of you, I was telling you the damn facts. Rotaries by nature are gas guzzlers... And from the fact that you bought one - and the way you drive - if you were worried about gas mileage you shouldn't have bought an rx-7.
I could be a jerk if I wanted to, I was just pointing out the blatantly obvious fact that rotaries make huge horsepower for the tradeoff of shit for gas mileage.
As for the friends comment - I've already made a few, and those are people who can deal with abrasive people like me.

On my first tank I got 17 mpg. Is there a notable difference in economy between the s4 and s5 engine?

the mileage is pretty much the same for S4 and S5, could be a bit different but not much
