checked the plugs, wires, rotor, and dis cap. gas is in, oil is good. new battery. the engine turns, but doesnt actually start, or seem to want to. the starter is turning the engine too. im thinking maybe battery cables, compression, or timing. any help is apreciated, as my car is sitting in the parking lot at work.

btw, i tried push starting it, and it still didnt start. so its not the starter.

thanks
paul

did you actually check to see if you had a spark?take the coil wire running to the engine or any wire for that matter and hold it close to a ground, IE screw or something metal. Make sure the wire is closer to the metal than it is to you. It hurts like hell to get shocked by that thing.

check if u have spark, other than that the only thing that comes to my mind is compression cuz thats what hapepend to an old KA

:2cents:
Listen to the fuel pump! When u turns the ignition key on, to accessories u should hear the pump build up pressure and then stop. If u can’t hear it open the fuel pump cover and try again. If nothing is sounding it could be your fuel pump or your ECU. My stanza (it has a KA) did the same thing and I had to rout the fuel pump directly to the circuit, meaning that the it is always on and not controlled by the ECU, so when I turn the key on accessories, the pomp sound will not stop.

One more idea, check your hoses, a small vacuum hose can make your life miserable. I had that too when I had the stanza. Look for crakes or loose hoses around the intake manifold, I had one and my car would not stay on for more then a few seconds…

Something to think about!

you should hear like buzzing sound thats the fuel pump building up pressure if you dont then is your pump.

Yes. try and start it. You will need someone else or jump the battery to the starter via a cable. To check the fuel, I would take the fuel hose off at the fuel filer, place it in a container, and turn the key to the on position. As you can imagine, fuel should spray out of the hose. Listening is probably sufficient, but taking the hose off is a sure way.

you most likely have a bad ignition coil... one way i saw my friend do to fry his coil was by putting the battery in backwards. i hope thats not what you did! i would say its about a 80% chance that you need to replace your ignition coil. costs $139.00 from nissan dealerships to replace, or go to a junkyard and try to find one for cheaper

i dont think i put the battery in backwards. it started up just fine at first, then the next time i went to start it, it just turned. i had someone check it out today and they suggested the fuel pump, without any hesitation. estimated 30-40 bucks. so im gonna replace that, and see what happens

Yes. try and start it while holding the coil wire (the one that goes from the coil into the middle of the distributor) very close to a ground. You will need someone else or jump the battery to the starter via a cable. Yes i don't mind repeating things once or twice. Nobody knows everything or the same things so I try and say what i know and expect the same courtesy from others. Its cool and let me know how it went.

damn dude if it is your fuel pump... you = fucked... you gotta empty and drop your gas tank to get at it... you did say that it turns over, but doesnt start, so im still stickin with the idea i had about the ignition coil. get a friend who has a 240 and take his lol

well, itll just sit there and crank, it wont actually try to turn over, maybe pump, maybe ignition coil. idk

Yea can't you get to it from the trunk area in the hatches. There is a grey plate back there that comes off and the fuel pump should be down there somewhere. Theoretically!!!

finally found time to work on this, its not the fuel pump...i got someone to help me and you can hear the pump turn on when i turn the key... no spark though, so im checking the ignition coil and distributer soon, just waitin for the kid to get back with his current meter

nissanfanatic

did you check the spark from the coil wire to the distributor? If you did then it is your coil..

zdude
03-19-2004, 10:32 PM
idk what they guy did, but its not the distributer(brand new) so its probably the coil. im workin tomorrow, so i dont have time to work on it much, but ill see if i can get some money, and time, and get a new coil. as soon as i get it running, im putting it in some newspaper that isnt oconomowoc. someone stupid enough will buy it, and ill be home free...no more money pit

ok, just found out its not the ignition coil either. just got the new one in, and it still does the same thing as before. i cant figure out what is wrong with it. i checked the spark, and there still isnt any, the rotor turns when its sposed to. any suggestions??

zdude
03-22-2004, 06:12 PM
came up with an idea, would it be the ignition module???

did you take the spark plug out? if not, unscrew the plug and have it still attached to the wire and hold that on a metal surface(make sure you aren't touching metal either, it hurts like hell) and get a friend try to start the engine that is how to see if you have a spark. also check your distrib. cap. I had a problem with the engine starting and all it was was a clamped/pinched fuel hose. Make sure none of your hoses are pinching or blocking any fuel/air to the engine.

yeah i pulled the plug out, i may have time this weekend to work on it, ill check all the lines, and see if i can borrow a volt meter to check for shortages or breaks in the charge. im pretty sure its not a pinched line though cuz when i try to crank it over, you can smell raw fuel. and the distributor cap is brand spankin new, has about 50 miles on it, i doubt its that. if i can get it running soon, im driving it out to my grandmas house to let it sit while i gather money and time to work on it. thanks for all your help guys
