i have a 93 civic hb, and i was wondering what part of the car i should begin to "race" out? i was told to start with a cold air intake and exhuast but what kind?

Intake, header, and exhaust work together ... you need all three to take full advantage of them parts ...

A few good brands to consider:
INTAKE: Hands down the new-gen AEM Cold-Airs are the best.
HEADER: DC 4-1, A'pexi 4-2-1
EXHAUST: HKS Hiper, A'pexi N1
Those two exhausts are two of the louder on the market, but they show the best gains on the dyno. Stay away from Greddy and Tanabe, both are big names with little dyno results. I've heard rave reviews about the A'pexi header too, although it's 4-2-1 which is mostly midrange power, it makes a very steady gain thoughout the powerband. And the intake, AEM definitely has that market cornered. Mostly though the parts you buy are going to be based on personal preference. My best advice to you is do your own research and make sure you get stuff that you want.

Exhaust: What you are looking at is a $500+ investment for about 5hp if even that, if you buy aftermarket like GReddy or HKS. In my opinion, you can buy a nice muffler for $120 and get piping custom done by a local exhaust shop for about $200. Right there you look and sound just as good, have nearly the same gain and saved $180.
also... dont think that these mods are gonna really make your car a 'race' car, it'll be quick, sound and look nice, but wont be a race car by any means.

actually my bf just bought the greddy evo for his prelude for like 300 or so on group buy center. so you can find it for under 500 if you put in the time to look.
als custom piping is not the same as buying a full cat back. my bf had the piping on his civic enlarged from 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 to the muffler and it really made not that much of a diff in power. the sound was just extremely loud, personally i think you get what you pay for an if you are willing to look and get a name brand such as greddy or tanabe it is well worth it instead of just enlarging the piping and buying a muffler. but thats jsut my opinion

Also...was your friend's crush bent or mandrel bent?
Did the shop use stainless steel piping? (many aftermarket exhuasts don't)
If you get a mandrel bent exhuast w/ a reasonably sized piping w/ just a muffler you will have just as good a gain as with a aftermarket one. Plus you can make sure the shop uses stainless steel piping and get a great quality exhuast at a lower price.
Did the shop use stainless steel piping? (many aftermarket exhuasts don't)
If you get a mandrel bent exhuast w/ a reasonably sized piping w/ just a muffler you will have just as good a gain as with a aftermarket one. Plus you can make sure the shop uses stainless steel piping and get a great quality exhuast at a lower price.

actually, if you live in a climate where they put salt and shit on the road in the winter, you should forget about tanabe's products. Only the muffler is stainless and the piping will rust just as fast as an OEM exhaust.

my friend has the racing medallion and personally i dont like the sound it makes.....it might be b/c he hasnt put the aftermarket headers in yet (if that makes a diff) but its that high pitched sound sometimes. personally i like the deep exhaust sounder better. its not as annoying:D

ok i ordered DC SPORTS HEADERS 4-2-1 (365 stainless steal), AEM INTAKE (179), and APEXi Dunk Exhuast (435)...hows that setup look?

most power numbers on these parts are calculated with a bored out and portmatched throttlebody for the intake, and a portmatched head for the headers.
i recommend the AEM CAI if you really MUST have that aluminum tube... if not, i recommend removing the intake resonator and installing a high quality air filter like K&N drop in or Spoon filter. it draws in cold air since the stock/oem design is to draw air in from under the fenderwell.
for header, i recommend the DC Sports in ceramic... it's cheaper, and you'll end up sending it to Jethot and having it coated in a GOOD thermal coating that wont chip or rust, and guarantees more performance. plus they now have a polished coating if "bling" is your thing. the polished coating doesnt discolor like stainless does.
for exhaust, i recommend the Thermal R&D Stealth series exhaust. it is low and boomy. no other exhaust on the market reproduces it's sound... makes all the other ones sound farty. if you're lookin to try and milk every last ounce of power from this motor, i dont recommend the Thermal Stealth. try their Classic series for a bit more power, tho you're gonna sacrifice with a slightly fartier tone, but boomier than all others nonetheless.
