leatherette upholstry

looking at purchasing a 97 528i can anyone help me with an explanation as to what leatherette is? and can it be dyed from a dark brown to black? is this a standard color combination dont really like the look.

thanks i figured it was bmw's fancy term for vinyl. just surprised that they still put vinyl in cars especially ones that expensive
