Throttle body cleaning... how to?

Hey guys, I want to do a throttle body cleaning, but the manual is a bit vauge about the whole thing... can you help? I have a 1997 GST.

I read some other posts, everyone keep saying that a port needs to be blocked so the spray does not get in, which port and where is it?

The manual says to remove the air hose, do i just undo the hose? Or do I need to undo the hose and the metal elbow pipe that's actually attached to the throttle body as well? If I remove the metal pipe, then I need to replace the gasket too right?

Can someone provide a instruction and a list of steps? If you have some pics, that would be way cool.

I've read on the web of different ways of cleaning the throttle body. Some say be careful not to spray too much, let the spray completely dry out before starting the car... Then there are others who say leave the car running, rev the engine and spray at the same time...

Which is right and which is better? Still my main questions, which tube/hose do I remove? Remove the metal elbow as well?

LoL thats funny you ask. I clean fuel systems every day at work. At valvoline the service is called ps3 or performance system 3. It is a 3 part system in which the injectors throttle body and the combustion chamber and other certain internals get cleaned. Find the chemical that you are going to use make sure you don't spray the throttle body cleaner directly into the throttle body. Spray the swap on a metal rod or stick it will come with and clean the throttle body as best you can. After its as clean as you can get it wipe it off with shop towel or something of that nature. After that you are ready to go. Only remove enough of the intake that is needed to get at the throttle body.

- Do I have to remove the metal elbow before the throttle body?
- Why does people say spray-away while the car's running. That certainly sounds like the agent will get into the body.
- Some others say spray with the car off and let it dry.

When cleaning the throttle body all you have to take off is the plastic intake (if stock) untill you get to the metal part of the intake. When you look into it you will see the valve that opens up when you press the pedal or use the lever next to the intake. car doesnt have to be running and you dont want to spray directly into your throttle body( trust me). You can let it dry on its own but make sure to scrub with something before you let it dry or wipe it off. every throttle body cleaning process is the same as far as i know. What exactly do you mean by spraying away. Leave your aim on next post if you want to ask me more questions.

May I ask why. I just did this yesterday with some Gumout TB cleaner, and I did it how their instrustions told me to... While engine running spray TB cleaner while working butterfly valve back and forth. Srpay for 10 sec. and let enigine run for 10 sec. Do not spray more than 10 sec continously. (this is off the top of my head so i may of missed something)

ArCeX, thanks again. Here's the thing, with the 2G turbo, there's this metal elbow I was talking about that's attached to the throttle body. So taking out the hose still leaves about 6 inches of bent metal pipe before the actual throttle body... and I can't see anything if I look into the tube.

Should I spray with the metal elbow on or not? That's the real question.

O wait your turbo... the gumout instrustions said do not use on turbo cars

You cant run the motor on the turbo cars with the intake pipe removed, the mass wont be reading any airflow ;) This is where we have to pay attention to the difference between NTs and turbos.

You will have to remove the TB elbow, just because there is no way you can even see the throttle plate with it on. Once that is out of the way the holes you are supposed to block are the ones at the bottom. They go to the FIAV and ISC. The FIAV is what can be damaged by cleaners. Once that is blocked with some duct tape, spray the plate on both sides, and the TB bore as you move the plate. Dont spray more than you need to, you dont want an ass load of liquid in the motor. Use a rag to clean up what doesnt wash off, as mentioned above.

Make sure the plate rotates freely and doesnt hang up or stick shut. Ideally you would have DSMlink or a scan tool to readjust the BISS after the cleaning. If not, dont worry about it, the ISC will take care of it. Dont forget to pull that tape ;)
