i have a 1990 jeep cherokee laredo. i have had this problem for a while now. it takes me a about 3-4 seconds to start the car. When i do, it revs up to 2000-2500 rpm, and then settle down to about 1000-1250 rpm. also, when i put the car in park to park it, it will rev up to 2000-2500 rpm and stay there until i turn the car off. please help...and thank you for reading.

if your gas pedal ain't sticking (i speak from experience) I suggest take it to a mchnc to get the sensors recalibrated or whatever the fancy word is that they use to diagnose throttle problems.
as for my revving problem, after a couple of scares i found that there was a wire hanging down from under the dash that was occasionally hooking up the gas pedal.

good call guys, sounds like the TPS (throttle positioning sensor). take it to a shop to either replace or calibrate. the part itself runs for about $170 cdn. i had the same problem and it fixed it.
