Hey guys, a little background info before we begin - right now, I'm 17 and drive a Porsche 944. I'm going to be graduating soon, and I'm looking for a different car to take to college. I won't lie, I'm pretty much a european car freak, however there is one American car that I like, and that is the vette body that was made between like '91ish - '96.
Anyway, basically what I would like to know is, are these cars reliable, are they incredibly expensive to maintain, is the interior comfortable for longer drives (as I'll be going to school about 4 hours from home), etc?
Any insight that yall could offer would be greatly appreciated, whether it be in answer to my questions, or general information about corvettes of that time period/ buying used corvettes etc.
- Thanks

I thought I should mention a few other things.....
1/4 mile times don't matter to me - I'm not a racer (but not opposed to spirited driving)
It definately has to be a manual; my Porsche is a manual, and I would not have a car any other way. Whatever I get will *not* be a convertable.
Passenger/cargo room also means nothing to me, if one other person can fit, thats good enough. Also, I do enjoy the rough ride of my present car - when I said comfortable interior, what I mean are seats that won't wear your back out (my seats are hard on the back for rides > 1 hour)...thats all I can think of right now that might be of interest...
- Thanks

I have a 1970 , so i cant really give you alot of pointers on 1991-1996 vettes but, i have ridden in some and have driven a couple. Im 6'3" at 240 lbs..and i found the seating to be tight--not real comfortable for my frame. I think on a long trip, id have to stop and stretch every 2 hours. I was very disappointed with the ride in the ones i drove...feel every bump and the body was not tight with only 60000 miles on them. The power was very good however. Nice technology. The prices of these years have really come down to whhere they are affordable . Now, i have driven a C5 generation corvette (1997 to present) , and they are VERY comfortable, the ride is real refined and soft, technology is incredible, gas mileage is 26 hwy or better with a 6 speed , and the power is even better than 1991-1996 ; some dont like the body styling, but, im getting used to it now. Im still partial though, to the C3 body style (1968-1982) with the swooping lines etc...which is what i have.
They are all great cars really, and im sure youll be happy with whatever you select. FOr a much better response to y our question...go to :www.corvetteforum.com and enter the C4 forum ---- youll find lot of guys with 1991-1996 vettes in there.

thanks for the insight
I don't know if this matters, but the reason I'm thinking corvette is because I want a fun/nice car for college, but I want to leave the porsche at the house in the garage since I plan on keeping it forever, but would only have the vette for college.
anyway...anyone have any idea how the t-tops for these cars are? leaky? noisy?

ME: I wouldnt buy a corvette then take it to college . Corvettes are targets for thieves , or, youll find some jealous person who will customize the paint at no charge. Personally, i think youre heading for trouble if you take the corvette to college ; why not get a daily driver like a good used 5.0 mustang or equivalent that will be fun , fast, and not so eye catching as a corvette sitting all alone ?? Just my opinion.
My t tops creak especially in colder weather. DOnt know how they are on the C4's.

...I can't stand mustangs...period (or most other american cars for that matter), basically if I get another car, it'll be a vette [I'm just a little stubborn, can ya tell? :) ]. I understand what you mean about thieves/people messing with it, but I don't think I'll have to worry about it so much where I'll be going. Thanks for the opinion though, I know its good advise, but I doubt I'll take it LOL.

i'm survived college with a vette, had a cut tire - it was almost worn out anyway. that stuff happens, sure. i have really really enjoyed mine. i live about 4 hours from home until my parents moved about 10 hrs away, i drive it everywhere!! sure it might be alittle uncomfortable, but that's that too. as far as the top goes, i like mine down!! the targa is real heavy and seems that it would be more trouble than its worth. Mechanix wise - DONT DO DOUGHNUTS!!!! the wheel bearings for the rear are $414 ea!! other than that, i have had very little trouble from mine, actually the most dependable thing i own! any questions, feel free to hit me back.
