Which corvette had the fastest stock engine?
The L88 engine of the 1967-69 era . It was advertised at 435 h.p/460 tq...but was actually about 550 h.p/600 tq. It was basically a racing engine for the street . It idled high at 1500 rpms and didnt come with a radiator fan shroud, radio, or heater in corvettes. Ive read articles which place the L88 era corvettes quarter mile time of 12 with street tires, to high 10's with proper tires and a 411 rearend.
The modern day LS1 / Zo6 Corvette (2001-present) ... comes very close to running the quarter at : 12. 6 seconds. And the upcoming 2006 LS2/ZO7 corvette will be faster still.
I have a bored out 454 cid built motor in my vette which is running close to the same h.p/tq as an L88 did...and i can tell you, when youre going thru the gears , its like a rocket throwing you back in your seat. Great feeling for a guy --- scary for a woman !

This motor was advertised at 435 h.p. ... but it was dyno'd at between 520 to 560 h.p. with 'tire sizzling' torque ! It was a race engine for the street (and strip of course).
Those were the good ol' days...when you could custom select your options on a car and usually had 3-4 engines to choose from. Commonly referred to now as : The Hippie Days ! Saturday night entertainment was hanging out at the local DogNSuds restaurant looking for someone to drag race with ... (on a deserted stretch of road AND for money of course....) . Dave
