This is copied from someone else (top approach):
For alt removal you can do it a couple ways, one from the top and one from the underside. I did mine from the top and here's how I removed it (going by memory).........
1. Remove air duct and disconnect battery (-) cable
2. Drain radiator and remove little black reservoir near battery. You might not need to drain the radiator-I was doing the timing belt so it was already drained
3. Disconnect fan connectors; one each side
4. Remove bracket on drivers side that goes accross top of the rad and fan
5. Remove 4 bolts securing fan and lift out entire fan shroud w/fans
6. Loosen tensioner pulley locknut (17mm) and backout tensioner screw until there is slack on belt
7. remove upper alt bracket
8. Remove alt connector and remove cap on alt and unbolt cable on terminal stud
9. Loosen lower alt bolt. It wont side out all the way and will hit the fender well. You have to loosen the bolt and pull it forwad. Jiggle alternator towards front of car and bolt and alt should come out together. Hard to explain.
Also, its a bear to get out if you have A/C. The A/C line goes directly accross the top of the alternator. I recommend placing cardboard against the rad to prevent damage to fins.
I may have missed a step or two, but the key is the fan shroud comes out. Not that bad just sounds like alot of work. Do the tensioner first because they do seize
Alternatively, you might be able to get it from the bottom with the splash guard removed.
