Anybody direct me on where I can go to get info on how to build my big block for my chevelle? Tips on cam choice, heads and etc.

Be a copycat by that I mean look at all the muscle car magazines you can find and look for a motor build up that matches what your looking for in your car, they have the money and backing plus a dyno etc. Or add up all the cost to build one yourself and hoping all the parts you chose compliment each other and you might find one of the fine crate motors available would be a good choice. Nothing is more frustrating then trying to tune a bad build, just something to think about

if your want to put a big block in a chevelle dont put a 454 in
you want to go with the 502 biult by edle brock if you have the money.
454s are for camaros not chevelles you know anyone with a 454 that thinks their fast let me know

Actually I think you can find several on this forum that think they have fast 454s.

Why would anyone want a slow reving 502. Im not impressed with them.

hmm, so your 540cid race engine, will beat a street built 454cid V8............... theres a shocker. my uncle had a 500cid V8 in his 69 camaro and ran mid to low 8's in the quarter mile. which is faster than your chevelle with 40 less cubes, so who is to say a 454 which is also smaller wouldnt be faster? try to stay open minded in the forums. feel free to share your opinions, but try not to look down on others for disagreeing with you.

to answer the thread topic. building the shortblock is relatively easy, just be sure to pic your parts baised on what you are looking to build. are you building a race motor, street motor, or a cross of the two?

well im guessing that your uncles car is alot lighter weight than mine
ya his engine is not a stright 454 its a 500 and my car also weighs over 4000 lbs
and ya size does matter my dad has a 68 camaro with a custom biult by him 620 cubic motor that run high 6's so ya why doesnt your uncle race my dad
good luck to him
but im not ragging on 454s i think they are great motors
but however in a heavy weight car like a chevelle i think you should go with the biggest motor possible

and if you dont have the money for that a 454 is a good choice because it is still a big block

well i feel sorry for 406Elcamino who think the 502's are slow reving i am very impressed

hhhhhuuummmmmmm
i wonder why 89IROC&RS hasent responed yet

ya i think 89IROC&RS knows alot about cars and i alos think that he/she knows that the size of the engine does matter, if you do it right

hmm, actually i didnt respond because oh, i dunno, i was at work perhaps? but seriously, size will matter with identically prepped engines, this is a given, however, who is to say that he would wind up building the same exact engine as you would plan, just with less cubes, and therefore less power?? he might try something you didnt think of, and get more power that way, it is ENTIRELY possible to build a 454 that would stomp a 502. your opinion is valued, however not everyone is here for a pissing contest, and must have the biggest best thing available. i dont know about the rest of the guys here, but for a street car, i would be perfectly happy with an LS5 396 360hp 1970 chevelle, and a LS6 450hp 454 would make me wet my pants. its all in what youre after. remember, its not nessesaraly going to be a race car. i certainly wouldnt want a top fuel engine in my daily driver would you?

oh and lets not start the my dad can whup your dad stuff, i was merely making a point, not starting a contest, that is not what AF is about.

o i agree it is possible to biuld a 454 that would stomp a 502 but like you said if you do the same to the motors size does matter
