This really ticked me off. I do all the work on my cars myself. Well some how the topic of getting a mechanic to do the work on your car is a good idea. Heres how it went..

Me:"I like working on my OWN cars, not some mechanic"
Friend 1:"WTF are you stupid, i'd rather have someone else do all the work for me"
Me:"Have you done ANY work on a car at all?"
Friend 1: "Who cares.."
Friend 2: "I changed a tire once"
Me: I think i need new friends. lol

Your prolly thinking "We they dont know shit about cars, so just might as well bring it to a mechanic." I try to teach them about cars, and their answer is something like this:

"Yeah, well when you do blah blah etc..."
"You know how much this means to me? Z E R O"
They dont even make an effort, yet they have the guts to call my cars pieces of shit. :rofl:

maybe they just don't have any interest in auto maintenance. i have a friends who's into fly fishing and all he talks about is that and he wants me to go and he never shuts the hell up about it. he gets really annoying to be around. don't be like that to them. find some common ground between all of you. people don't usually say things like "Yeah, well when you do blah blah etc..." and "You know how much this means to me? Z E R O" out of the blue. sometimes when my friend goes off on one of his Fly fishing tangents i find myself saying some things i would normally think and not say, like "yeah that's fuckin great dude" and roll my eyes or something to that extent.

Some people just dont enjoy working on cars and much rather send it out and get it fixed. Thats rude that they call your cars junk though. Offer to help them next time instead of letting them send it out for XXXX dollars maybe they'll catch on then just an idea.

i have a friend who is the absolute complete opposite to your friends, he is "Mr. Fix-Alot" i swear, he thinks that if it's broken, HE CAN FIX IT. In the process of 'fixing' sh*t, he breaks it...

And i couldn't give a shit about learning about how to fix cars, i tryed to get motivated, i did work experiance in a mechanic trade, didn't like it, my dad tried to get me into it, i tryed to help, i really did, i tried to learn how to change the oil, or re-fill the water thing, but i can't do it, i hate it to be honest

Ok, $.02 or whatever.

I used to look down on people who don't know anything about their rides. But, after 17 years as a mechanic, I can appreciate those who are smart enough to realize that they don't know, don't want to know, and would rather have someone else fix it.

I have come in to a lot of jobs where one of the mechanically declined masses has taken something apart, and then realized that they were in waaayyyy over their head. By the time I get it, parts are bent/broken/missing/etc. and I have to try and put it all together again. Usually they explain what led to these circumstances, and I can relate, I also tell them that its cool to ask questions of those who know, rather than jump in feet first and land on their head.

Trying to keep the cost down, for the guy who wanted to cheap out and do his own stuff, is usually no longer an option in these cases.

If someone slags one of my rides, and drives a "signature" car, I laugh at them, but I don't call them down for not knowing anything. I just let them know that I find more satisfaction in building what I drive, than chasing lot lizards in a car that daddy's money paid for.

I think if your mechanical abilities are limited to changing a flat, and maybe changing oil and filters, great. at least know the basics. These are the " basics " that everyone should know. Beyond that, hey, if you're not into it, leave it to the guys who do it for a living.
