I just bought a 1997 4 cyc Jetta without a owners book. Does anyone know the recommended motor oil weight? And any suggestions to what brand is the best to use?

I like Mobil 1. Yea it a little more expensive but its full synthetic so it provides better protection and you can go a lot longer between oil changes. I have had a 00 2.0 and I used 10w 40. Good luck.

I believe manufacturer recommends:
>50 F use 20W50
>14 F to 50 F use 10W40
< 14 F use 5W30
In Virginia I'd use 20W50 in the Summer & 10W40 in the Winter.

my manual(2.8) states that the car is shipped with 5w20, but 5w30 is recommended for a non-extreme climate.
