Need advise

Need to know if anyone has experienced problems with the factory installed security system. I am having problems with my 1994 firebird not starting - does not turn over but panel lights come on. Initally I was told that it was the ignition cylinder which I had replaced and had new keys made with new chips. The car lasted about three weeks before having the same problem. This time when it got to the shop it started once there and I was told there was not much they could do since there was nothing wrong. It is still acting up but I have noticed that the security light on the panel comes on and stays on and I am unable to start the car. If I wait about 10 mintues or so until the light goes off, I am then able to start the car. I inquired at the dealership about by-passing the security system and I was told I could not. Is this true? Any suggestions? I have an after market alarm on it but I had it on there since I bought the car about 7 years ago.

Yep, it sure sounds like a bad VATS decoder. You say that you replaced the ignition? You did replace it with a VATS ignition switch right? See, usually when you have a problem with these it's with those tiny little wires that go down the column and into another plug. But, if you replaced the ignition switch with the correct part, you would have fixed the problem.

Now, does the security light come on or flash either when driving or starting the car? What you could do to bypass VATS altogether is to put a resistor inline on the VATS wires. Doing this renders the system useless. Just read the "chip" in the key with a voltmeter then cut the VATS wires in half. The ends that go up under the dash to the BCM you will connect each end of the wires to each end of the resistor. If you can not get the exact resistance value, try being a little higher but not lower. So, if you need 1500 ohms but can only get 1501 ohms or 1499 ohms, go with the 1501.

I just got a 94 firebird for my birthday and it shakes a lot when I have the car in drive and come to a stop,then it will shut off. Changed the gas filter has just gotten a complete tune-up. What could it be?
