Poerformance Mods and the Tiptronic

I'm looking to go to forced induction with my '93 968 W/ Tiptronic trans. With the exception of going all out and switching to the 6-spd, does anyone know what the limitations are, and whether I would risk damage with a supercharger or turbocharger that should produce about 325-350 rwhp?
Also, does anyone know of other options for forced induction? I have checked out the Powerhaus and Anderson Motor Works turbo conversions, the Speedforce and Ninemeister supercharger kits, and I want to check out everything before I dive in.

the 968 motor was built at its limit. if you supercharge/turbocharge it without lowering the compression your asking for trouble. of the top of my head i think it is close to 11.1:1 compression ratio which is too high for even 7 lbs of boost.

Sorry that it took me so soon to get back to this... I was concerned mostly with the limitations of the Tiptronic transmission. I have examined the requirements for engine compression, and will be very careful in building the engine. Power isn't much good if it isn't reliable. I would rather have less HP if it worked efficiently, and I didn't have to worry about the engine blowing up on me....

Forced Induction w/ Tiptronic is fine.

They made 951's w/ Automatics so Im sure Tiptronic would be just fine since there are other factory turbocars with Tiptronic also.

Forced Inducting a 968 is pricey but if you have the cash than go for it cause there beasts when forced.

What are you interested in? Turbocharging or Supercharging?

If you turbo you will need lower compression pistons. Im not real sure if you would need to lower compression with a Supercharger.

The cheapest way to go is with a Supercharger.

There are 500-600rwhp Turbocharged 968 and 968 based engines out there.

I believe the 900 & 1000hp Doom cars engine was based on a turbocharged 968 motor.

I'm looking at supercharging most likely. That will allow me to keep fabrication to a minimum, keep me from modifying the engine (pistons and so on). At 1/3 the cost of most turbo mods I have seen, a relative steal.

All the Supercharger kits I seen for 924/944/968 are a bit over $5K thats just for the parts not install labor costs. So figure about $1-2K extra fro labor. Which is still less than most Turbo kits alone.

I dont know what amoutn of fabrication goes into suprcharging. Most kits use the same Supercharger used in factory supercharged cars liek a AMG Mercedes. They are not the best superchargers around but im sure there reliable and still put out a nice punch. I think you see like 80-90hp gains but not 100%. Best bet is to contact a tuner that sells these kits and ask questions cause they are the ones who are gonna know what you need and what needs to be done to install them and estimate a labor cost.

Most shops are gonna charge $50-$70 per hour for labor. So you can see labor cost can rack up quick and I believe the install is a 10-12hr job.

I've spoken to Speed Force Racing about it, and their kit runs about 6K with no additional fabrication necessary. Everything is provided and bolts to existing hardware and brackets. From what I understand, it's not too crazy for a reasonably competent auto hobbyist to accomplish themselves. I will likely attempt the install myself if I go with the SFR product. 9M racing in the UK also has a similar package (they helped SFR with software for theirs) but their kit is marginally more expensive. You get a bit more HP out of it and a less peaky torque curve with their software, but for the extra 3500 bones, I don't think it is quite worth it. This project is in the planning stages right now, and I hope to accomplish it by next summer.... Money doesn't grow on trees ya know. 8) Anywho, once it gets off the ground, I will keep a thread going documenting the whole thing. Thanks for you thoughts.....
