hey all, (ni hao)
im from australia, was browsing and found this forum. ok ill fill u in.
ive been looking for a car for the 2 past months, looking at investing my money in a civic 96 model and up (f & f' movie coupe or hatch) or a prelude 92 - 96 model.
im really confused, here we have aws, si, s, vti and vti-r preludes. im really confused.
im after good performance = vtec.
another thing the vtec ones here are mostly automatic (most vtec models 5 speed are sold), as im really after a vtec 5 speed. Will i be disadvantage going auto? (I do want the racing feel)
If you boys could help me, show me your magic.
btw we work on kW here, so hp doesnt get me. ERRRRR

AWS = All Wheel Steering (Si)
S = Base Model ~ 135hp SOHC
Si = 2.3L 160hp DOHC
VTI and VTIR sounds like sound form of a Prelude VTEC or another. If you pop the hood and see the word "VTEC" and Honda written under it, its the 190hp Prelude VTEC. There is only one model of Prelude with VTEC (unless you count the crazy JDM model).
Automatics are annoying simply because you can't shift when you want to. That means that a 5speed car against an auto car will win in drag. In some events, like Autocross, automatics are sometimes desirable to make it easier to drive.

Actually Aces, i would think you have it backwards about the auto being a auto-x tranny of choice and vice versa.. you can shift an auto, but you just get that horrible lag between gears. Auto-x, I'd think you'd want more control over where you are in the RPM range, especially at your maximum traction threshhold.
ANYWAY.. I'd rather stick it out and buy a manual. You will get more enjoyment out of your vehicle. Don't spend 4 - 6000 dollars on something you don't want. I sure wish I would have waited and bought a VTEC prelude. More 'KW' than the regular h23 Si.
The only benefit from a civic is that the aftermarket is much larger.

5sp is a *bitch* in Autocross. Unless you were a fantastic driver (which I will admit I'm not the greatest), alot more people do better with an automatic. I've done some events, it's tougher than you'd think.

I've test driven a 94 prelude SI auto and the acceleration is horrible compared to my 95 SE 5-spd. Due to the fact that there's one less gear in the automatic makes the gears way too long for fast acceleration.
however, the only plus was that the auto prelude had a significantly quiter interiors(no rattling of loose screws, sun visors), sunroof.

Si has a bigger engine than S and AWS meaning more power? and whats this SOHC and DOHC?
Si has 190 hp (2.3L)?, vtec has 200 (2.2L)?
and S and AWS are 160hp 2.3?

Read my post above.
AWS is a model of the Si. Same engine.
In the fourth generation, VTEC has 190hp. In the fifth, they have 190, 195, and 200; progressively.
Dual Overhead Cams and Single Overhead Cam. DOHC and SOHC.

DOHC preludes have dual cams. If you look at the engine you will see that the spark plugs are lined up in the groove right in the middle of the valve cover. two cam gears for the engine in order to turn the 2 cams. in terms of 4 cylinder engines, having 4 valves per cylinder( 2 intake, 2 exhaust) thus 16 valves. they usually have more power than single cam cars because there's more intake valves, thus more fuel can be put in.
SOHC have single cams. one cam gear. usually only 12 valves, like in a civic lx dx or ex. The civic si has a DOHC engine.
then you have the only 4th gen with SOHC the F22.
go to howstuffworks.com to find out more about these two types of engines.

this, i find a little case dependant. it could just be attributed to the general upkeep of the car, and how/where it was driven..
but you could be right.. autos are usually driven more conservatively, thus, the less interior noise caused by harsh driving.

Actually, skip the Si/Si AWS and go for the Prelude VTEC (You'll know if it is the h22a block or not if you pop the hood and see 'VTEC' written over the valve cover). You won't find any VTEC's that are automatic. I've a 4th gen (92-96) bias myself, this generation weighing slightly less.
I am seventeen, and still learning.

Buy a cheap 92-96 prelude, and drop an h22a engine in it. Its a vtec motor with 205 hp. It will cost u around $1500. It will be worth it in the long run.

There is no h22a that is 205hp.
The 93-96 Prelude VTEC already has a 190hp h22a.

Actually...
Check this out, I found this on Honda's site.
http://www.honda.co.jp/HOT/ModelData/prelude/92pu-k-109/si_vtec_sy.html
200^6,800
That's 200hp @ 6.8k RPM. And I'm sure it's as JDM as they get.

Ya thats rite, 200hp at 6800 rpm, mine is 205 hp because its a manual tranny, the auto tranny is rated at 200hp

Crankshaft recieves power before the transmission..
Although, I don't know if Canadians get some slightly higher compression engine, or something else that will make 5 more hp than the Japanese. I doubt the Japanese would do that to themselves though.
I've also never heard of an H22 rated at 205 hp from the factory, and certainly no difference between them for the different transmissions. Could be wrong though, since Honda did that to the ZC..
Show some proof..

Link me man.. I said show me.. I don't know what "japanese websites" you are talking about. All the Japanese VTEC preludes I've ever seen have been 200 hp. That's what they claim at least. Maybe I misinterpreted the Japanese that I read so well............ :uhoh:
