1995 trany noise

To start off i have a 1995 S10 PU and its got the 4.3L. Ive been gettin alot of noise from the trans... the noise is there when the cluth is not depressed.. and makes alot of noise when in neutral and atempting to shift into gears (this happens when the clutch is not depressed.. and i dont press hard on the shifter) i called my local trans guy and he said this trans is "a bear".. im wanting to know if anyone has any recomendation on a trany swap.. and/or how hard it is to do...im pretty mechanical.. just no experience when it comes to trans.. i have a neighbor who works on VW's alot and is a genius when it comes to that so he could help me a little..

What kind of noise is it? Does the transmission work properly (all gears work, shifts OK, no grinding when shifting)? Sometimes a bad throwout bearing and/or worn fork will cause a rattle when the clutch pedal is not being pushed, but will stop making the noise (or make much less noise) when a slight pressure is put on the clutch pedal.

its a grinding noise.. all gears work fine.. only makes noise when clutch pedal is not depressed

If the noise stops just as you begin to feel resistance when pushing the clutch pedal, my guess would be the fork and/or throwout bearing.

has anyone replaced a throwout bearing.. that could tell me if it is difficult??

Uh oh. I know exactly what your problem is. Check your manual transmission fluid IMMEDIATELY. If you don't know where, there are two large allen wrench style plugs on the side of the transmission. The bottom one is the drain, the top one is where you check it. I recommend that you drain it and check the fluid for metal shavings. Make sure you go to your local chevy dealer and get the special manual transmission fluid chevy makes. It should take three quarts. I just changed the transmission out in my 1997 s-10 and it was a pain. It took me and another guy about 14 hours to do it. It was making the same noise you describe for about 3 months beforehand but I didn't realize what the problem was. I thought it was the throw out bearing and figured on changing it when it went out. I was dumb. It took me three months to find a rebuilt tranny for it and cost me about 1100 bucks.

As to the throw out bearing issue, you have to remove the transmission to change it. So, if you ever have to pull the transmission it is a good idea to change all the clutch parts while you are at it.

well i get paid tomorrow so i will change the fluid.. and do you have any advice if it continues..?? a friend of my has a race car shop.. so i have to wait like 3 weeks till his engine gets in so i can use his lift to change the throwout bearing if it contiues.. thanks everyone for your reply

Just make sure you check the fluid for metal shavings. If there are a lot then you got problems.

well it was to late.... i burnt the trans up.. there was pretty much no fluid in it.. if you know where i can get a new venture replacement tell me im desprate... thanks everyone for your help

The place I got mine was in Franklin, Kentucky. If I remember the name of the place I will write back. I think it was a salvage yard but they also sell new and rebuilt trannies.
