Wont shift out of park

I have a 96 Sr5 V6. Everything has worked fine till the other day. I stopped and put it in park and when I tried to put it in drive again, the button on the shifter would not depress. I tried everything. I turned the car off and now when I start it, it makes a groaning noise and I can feel it through the brake. I have to stick a screwdriver in the hole next to the shifter to get the button to depress so I can get it out of park. Every other gear works fine. Any ideas what went wrong?

Maybe the spring in your shaft is fawked or something has become dislodged. Worst case scenario is that your shift lock is malfunctioning because you can still get it out with the fail safe i would look to see if that has failed. then as a second resort check the spring in the shift shaft.

And any idea on the grunting moaning that makes the brake shudder? Started right when the gear thing went wack.

It did it about 6 seconds after i turned the car on. I found out what it was though. Damn 10 amp fuse for the brakes. Replaced that and everything worked like a charm. Amazing.
