Yes they can add a lot of hp depending on the brand and will give you a noticable change in get up and go.

No they can be very harmful to your car and the power that is freed up, not gained, is very little on a motor that has stock internals. I would stay away from them and spend that money on something that will net you more power. :2cents:

pullys = good! AEM underdrive pullys are good quality and free up +/- 10 hp. downsides = diming lights etc. when comming to a stop. they are a good investment and they also look good.

Ok can one person explain to me what makes these pullies good? I am talking about a technical explanation. You cannot go around blurting out this is good and that is good and you will gain this much, without some sort of tecnical reason. I have posted many of times before about the dangers of under drive and lightened crank pullies, search this forum or the Lets get technical forum and you can read it for yourself.

Please stop advising people that something is good unless you have the technical knowledge to back that product up!

whtteg is right, Some friends and the shop owner were talking about this, It throws the harmonic balance or something off. He makes the pulleys with the balancer in them, but he said even though he makes them, he wouldn't buy them(even though he makes them) because they only free up like 1 hp for 300 bux.

i recently did a timing belt job etc, and i bought some aem pulleys (ps and alt) since they didnt cost much more than belts alone, i know that unorthodox crank pulley/s free up more hp because of the crank but i knew that it would take away the harmonic balancer so i opted to stick to aem and leave the crank pulley alone.
when my mechanic was doing the timing belt, it kept trying to slip off, after a while he talked to some people and figured out that it was the harmonic balancer that was making it slip, he didnt put it on yet because he was testing the belt, but when he put the balancer on everything was fine.
so from recent personal experience, i suggest leave the crank pulley and harmonic balancer alone because of the vibration its easier for the timing belt to slip which could cause some severe damage.
i havent really punched my car so i cant tell if theres any difference with the aem pulleys on, though its basically like an intake etc very mild gains if any and u wouldnt feel much difference anyways. but i notice a kind of whine noise now, sounds like a ghost or wind, i cant tell if its coming from the pulleys or the new timing belt since they are in the same area. gonna let my mechanic check it out today. anybody get weird whiny noises with new pulleys?

Some aftermarket pullies don't come with the harmonic balancer like the OEM pulley does. I have an Unorthodox Racing Pulley and have yet to install. It's for sale, 200 usd shipped if anyone wants it. It's for a b18c1 without powersteering or air conditioning.

I heard mixed recommendations on it:

POSITIVE:
The pulley is okay to install if you don't plan on revving the engine too high.(from pure-tuning.com)

NEGATIVE:
Without the harmonic balancer, can cause damage to the oil pump, etc.(from theoldone.com)

This is coming from a VR6 VW person but I have the Unorthodoxy pulleys on my car. When I got them I noticed that it revved a lot quicker(redline on VR6's 7200rpm) and I did notice the banshee wail that one of the posters mentioned. Has anyone looked at other chat boards or mags to see what the real affect that pulleys have on their B series cars.

Do a search on google on torsional vibration and you will find out why you don't want to get an aftermarket pulley, or if you do get one what you want to look for. Every motor has torsional vibrations and the "harmonic balancer" is what off sets these and hels to absorb them.
