i think i'd stick to a small block. lighter weight and they rev higher without blowing apart. i'd find a good block bore it .030 over get some forged 10.5:1 pistons, vortec heads GM performance intake 750 cfm carb, 280 degree cam with around .5" lift, big headers & 3" exhaust with big mufflers, msd ingition, K&N filter. this engine set up is good for around 400+hp&400+ft-lbs with a redline at about 6300. turbo400 tranny stage 2 shift kit, B&M rachet shifter, 1600rpm stall speed convertor. GM 12 bolt diff 3.42 gears auburn gears posi. of course thats what i would do my buddy has a similar set up in his chevelle and it breaks the tires loose when it shifts into drive. if that isn't enough add a 150 shot of nitrus and a 4340 forged crank with 4340 forged rods. man that would be the ultimate rice killer!! if it were me i'd try to leave the body as stock as possible except for big ass tires on the back.

I'd only use nos if you were positive that your engine could handle it...make sure your cylinders are in good shape, along with your connecting rod's, pistons,
etc

the regular effects of detenation: blown pistons, broken rods, broken crank, dished valves not much fun. if you have a strong engine and some way of retarding the timing it should be fine.
