Anyone Brave And Patient Enough To Build A 16v G60? Or Anyone Who Has Already Build One?
Exchange Of Info Needed.....
Or.... let's take it right from the beggining...
Once upon a time, there was a decent '89 Golf Gti 16v, producing around 136 bhp. It's owner (me :naughty: ) fooled around with it for some time but it was not fast enough.... .. and the Master shouted: "More power please!!!"®....
The cylinder head was ported, compression went up to 10.5:1, there were brand new Schrick 276deg cams instaled, 2 adjustable pulleys, bla bla bla, the system pressure was rised a bit, the Ecu was reprogrammed (yes some crazy good people do reprogram this Ecu) the revs were limited to 8800rpm (limited?), and some other minor changes, and there we go: Dyno day...
well we had 168bhp@7000 and lots of torque at the high end of the band... the car was quite fast...(I left 2 cars behind a Leon 1,8t 4x4 180bhp at the 0-500m), but it was a 170bhp Golf as long as you runed it above 4500rpm...below that, it was just I was driving my 1,0l '88 Polo....
it was not more than 4 months later that my 020 2y gearbox decided that it had enough and decided to leave this miserable world(or in simple words it broke...). So, it seems that the good old 020 can not cope with over 150bhp.. let's find a find a more reliable gearbox that can put 200bhp on the road... Since then I have mastered the art of changing gearboxes (in my garage-no roof-and 4.5x2,5m), I have already changed 4 gearboxes (including one from a rallye 4wd) but still I believe that the ratios of the 020 2Y were the best.I will try to transplant the gears of the 020 to the corrado gearbox that I have on now and I will inform you about the results....
Anyway, thinking that a new gearbox capable of witholding about 200bhp would be installed, I thought: why not having some more hp?
(you know, that voice in the back of your head yelling: More power!!!).
It was time for some serious thinking...... there were two options: stroking the old good 1.8 16V to 2.0 or 2.1 litters, or kissing the 16V goodbye and going instead for a G60, which with some minor mods would reach 200bhp...
Both of the options though seemed "little"......I wanted something more...sophisticated....
And there it comes....(the idea)...why not making a 16v G60?!!!!
Yeah, why not? VW Motorsort has done it, why can't I? I must have been out of my mind back then....
The 1.8l 16V G60 produced by VW Motorsport for the G60 Golf Limited Eddition, produced 210bhp and 274Nm, which were a good point to start from.... will be back soon for details...
