Interior gas smell

Hey guys, new to the forum here and have a question that I hope someone may be able to answer. I have a 944 N/A with 56k original miles and seem to have a strong odor of gas in the interior. Is there some air filter or charcoal canister that needs to be changed intermittently on these cars? Or is there any thing that can be done about this smell? Thanks guys

Does it smell like exhaust gas as well? If so, look into your rear hatch seal. Otherwise, the charcoal canister is probably located in the drivers side fender near the firewall. Check out the lines first.

i had the same problem... however, no exhaust smell.
turned out to be my fuel pump was leaking gas through the positive electrical terminal.
i quickly fixed that by getting a new fuel pump.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. It doesn't really smell like exhaust so I will def check the charcoal and fuel pump/lines. Thanks for the help. I'll keep you guys informed on what I find.

There is a cabin filter that alot of peopel dont change. It may be very old and need replacing. Replace that and see if the smell clears up.

Where is the cabin filter? I have replaced the rear hatch lower seal, checked the exterior charcoal filter for broken hoses and still get a bad exhaust smell while driving up to freeway speeds. I also have a bad gas smell right after filling it up. I just got it smog checked and the numbers are very low so I can't see it being a catalytic conv. problem. Any ideas?

I still have an exhaust/gas smell.I occurrs mainly when I open a window. I have replaced the rear window seal, charcoal filter and checked the fuel lines. The gas tank has been pressure tested and nothing obvious is showing a problem. More input needed.

hey guess what , we may be the only 2 people, because my 944 has the exact same issue. smells like raw fumes not exhaust and only a window open, and / or going around corners

So what have you done to track down the problem? I cannot find an exhaust leak, pressure in the tank is good. A guy at the dealer talked about some o-rings that could be bad. I will meet with him and get more details. Does you car run perfect? Mine runs perfect so I have difficulty changing perfectly good parts to troubleshoot the problem. The smell is difficult to say if it goes away after a few minutes because it is so heavy. I know that when I parked it in the garage the other day, the smell consumed the garage for a few hours. It makes me sense there is an oil leak burning on a header without any smoke. Maybe fuel leaking and burning off? Do you have any sources to fix the problem or out here on a limb like me?

just a thought, but maybe your gas cap is bad...its such a simple idea, we might forget about it. They are really cheap, so you might want to just get one and try it out. Who knows...

got the same problem 86 turbo noticed a very faint exhaust smell coming up from headers

had same problem. fuel rail leaks at mount bracket. very hard to find because it evaporates so quickly

PS I read somewhere that there is a two gallon reserve in the fuel tank. That mystery I have yet to figure out.

It is my understanding that you have two gallons to find a station after the orange warning light illuminates on the fuel guage.

I am not sure if that is in addition to the 26 some odd gallon tank or the last two gallons of it.

I noticed the other day, after a fill up, a fuel smell in the cabin. It also seemed that I did not get a full burn out of my tank, but I have an intermittant odometer also.

I will advise on my findings when I get around to working on it.... probably in a month or so (I'm Bad) that is unless it quits today then I'll report this afternoon.........

I had that same problem. I got another fuel rail, then it started leaking a month or so later. So I used some soapy water and my dads air-compressor to find the leaks and I used a flux-coated brazing rod and oxy-ace welded the cracks.

So far, that leaks been good to me *knock on wood* but I had to keep switching and fixing both fuel rails a few times. I think I solved it by testing them at a higher pressure. They must be shaking a lot to break there.

I had the same thing on my 1987 944. Fresh raw gas smell when filled up all the way. Something to do with the overflow tube located in the gas cap area being disconnected. Which then drips gas into your left wheel well under your rear carpeting. This only happened when I filled her up to the brim with gas, which I didn't do anymore.

Andrew, I know that your original post was done quite some time ago, but I just had a similar problem with a 944 Turbo race car which I recently purchased. After filling up, there was a strong smell of raw gasoline coming from the rear hatch area (I was on the track at the time, which was a little unsettling). Turns out that there is a plastic overflow tube connected inside the rear fender to the neck of the gas filler port, which is routed down and out through the bottom of the fender well. Mine was disconnected from the filler port, which allowed the gas to spill into the fender well. Also, it was not correctly routed out of the car. After you notice the smell, look on the right rear fender behind the wheel opening, to see if there are oily/gas streaks (also around the gas filler door). If so, then the disconnected overflow tube is likely to be your problem. It is virtually a no cost fix, and is easily accessible behind the carpet (a mechanic reconnected the tube, and crimped it on securely). Problem solved, but still probably a good idea not to top off when filling up.
